Steelpaint’s Stelcatec Coating Gets UK Rail Approval

Post by : Meena Rani

Steelpaint GmbH, a German manufacturer of industrial coatings, has achieved a major milestone by gaining approval from the UK’s Network Rail for its innovative Stelcatec protective coating system. This development is expected to transform the maintenance and protection of steel structures in the UK rail network, offering a modern, efficient, and durable solution to prevent corrosion and extend the life of critical infrastructure.

What Is Stelcatec?

Stelcatec is a specially designed three-layer protective coating for steel structures. It is a moisture-cured urethane system, meaning it hardens naturally when exposed to moisture in the air. Unlike traditional coatings, which often require mixing several components and careful preparation, Stelcatec is a single-pack system. This makes it easier and faster to apply while minimizing the risk of application errors. Its design ensures consistent coverage and reliable protection even under challenging conditions.

Network Rail Approval

In early 2025, Stelcatec received formal approval under the specification XM92/M24 from Network Rail, the organization responsible for the UK’s rail infrastructure. This approval followed rigorous testing, including a live demonstration at Specialist Painting Group’s facility in Peterborough. During this test, Stelcatec was applied to steel samples that were manually prepared to standard cleaning levels. The coating was successfully applied in three layers within four hours using only rollers, demonstrating its fast application capabilities. Subsequent adhesion tests confirmed that the coating adhered strongly even on marginally prepared surfaces.

Benefits of Stelcatec

  •  Faster Application

Traditional coatings often require long drying times and complex steps. Stelcatec, however, can be applied efficiently within a single shift, saving time and reducing labor costs.

  •  Long-lasting Protection

Stelcatec is designed for steel structures in high-stress environments. It provides excellent resistance to corrosion and protects infrastructure for years, reducing maintenance requirements and costs.

  • Easy Application

Its single-pack system simplifies the application process. Workers do not need to mix components, which reduces the chance of mistakes and ensures consistent results every time.

Attention Beyond the UK

Stelcatec is not only gaining attention in the UK. In Germany, it has already been used to repair paintwork on ship-to-shore cranes at ports in Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven. The cranes’ original equipment manufacturer, ZPMC, certified Stelcatec after successful testing. This shows that Stelcatec works in various industrial settings, from heavy machinery to rail infrastructure, proving its versatility and effectiveness.

Impact on UK Rail Infrastructure

Approval of Stelcatec by Network Rail represents a significant step forward in maintaining the UK’s steel rail infrastructure. The coating’s faster application process and superior durability mean that critical steel structures, such as bridges, platforms, and rail components, can be protected more efficiently and at a lower cost. As the UK continues to upgrade and expand its rail network, Stelcatec is expected to play a key role in ensuring long-lasting, safe, and reliable infrastructure.

Steelpaint’s Stelcatec coating system is a major advancement in protective coatings for steel structures. With approval from Network Rail and successful applications in industrial environments, it is set to make a lasting impact on rail and other infrastructure sectors. Its combination of speed, durability, and ease of use makes it an essential solution for protecting steel against corrosion and maintaining long-term performance.
