In a transformative leap for France’s transportation network and climate ambitions, global engineering leader Systra has been awarded the prestigious mandate to lead the country’s most ambitious high-speed rail (HSR) project yet—the development of the Bordeaux–Toulouse and Bordeaux–Dax lines, collectively part of the landmark Grand Projet Ferroviaire du Sud-Ouest (GPSO).
This historic project marks a defining chapter in Europe’s push toward next-generation, low-emission mobility. Spanning over 327 kilometers of new high-speed track, the GPSO will dramatically cut travel times across southwest France, reduce reliance on road and air transport, and stimulate long-term economic growth across key regions. The centerpiece: a high-speed connection between Paris and Toulouse, which will shorten travel time by over an hour—creating a new benchmark in national connectivity.
As lead consultant, Systra’s role goes far beyond engineering blueprints. The company will take on end-to-end project management, systems integration, and oversee all technical, environmental, and operational dimensions—from construction oversight to ensuring compliance with sustainability and safety standards. It’s one of the most extensive and technically demanding infrastructure contracts Systra has ever undertaken on French soil, underscoring its stature as a global rail systems expert with projects in over 80 countries.
The second major corridor—Bordeaux to Dax—lays the foundation for future international rail expansion, ultimately linking up with Spain and bolstering trans-European connectivity across the Iberian Peninsula. Beyond improving passenger convenience, these routes are expected to drive economic revitalization, ease congestion, and support France’s commitment to carbon neutrality.
Financing the GPSO is a collective endeavor: the French government, regional authorities, and the European Union have all joined forces, underlining the geopolitical and environmental significance of the project. It also reflects growing public and political consensus that rail must be at the heart of the continent’s sustainable future.
With operations expected to launch by 2032, the GPSO isn’t just a railway upgrade—it’s a symbol of France’s forward-looking infrastructure vision. Under Systra’s stewardship, the project promises to deliver a greener, faster, and more connected future for millions of travelers—making it not just a rail project, but a national transformation in motion.
