From September 22, 2025, car buyers in India will see a welcome change in the showroom prices of some of Toyota’s most popular models. The government’s new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rule has simplified the tax structure for large sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and multi-utility vehicles (MUVs). Because of this change, Toyota has announced big price cuts on the Fortuner, Innova Crysta, and Innova Hycross. For many variants, the reduction ranges from over one lakh rupees to as much as ₹3.49 lakh, depending on the model.
Why are the prices dropping
For a long time, cars in India were taxed under multiple categories. SUVs like the Fortuner and Innova Crysta had one of the heaviest tax burdens. Customers were paying 28% GST plus an extra “compensation cess” of 22% on these vehicles. This extra cost made the cars significantly more expensive.
The Innova Hycross was in a slightly different bracket. While it also had 28% GST, the cess was 15%, not 22%. Still, the combined tax rate made the vehicle costlier than it could have been.
Now, with the government’s new policy, the total tax has been simplified into a single flat rate of 40%. This means Toyota no longer has to add different tax slabs for different versions. Instead, it applies one clear tax rate, and the result is that the final showroom prices are lower.
Toyota has chosen to pass on the full benefit of this rule change to its customers. This means car buyers will directly see the reduced prices when they step into a dealership.
How much cheaper are the SUVs now
The price reductions vary across models and versions. Let’s look at the details:
Toyota Fortuner
The popular 4×2 manual petrol version, which earlier cost ₹36.05 lakh, will now be available for ₹33.65 lakh. That’s a drop of ₹2.40 lakh.
Another 4×2 manual version has been cut by ₹2.45 lakh, making it ₹34.28 lakh.
The Fortuner 4×2 “Leader” version has also dropped in price by ₹2.49 lakh, now priced at ₹34.79 lakh.
The 4×2 automatic variant is now ₹2.60 lakh cheaper than before.
The higher 4×4 manual model has dropped by ₹2.72 lakh.
The premium 4×2 automatic “Legender” version is ₹2.97 lakh cheaper.
The biggest reduction comes in the Fortuner GRS edition, which has dropped by ₹3.49 lakh, bringing its new price down from ₹52.34 lakh to ₹48.85 lakh.
Toyota Innova Crysta
The entry-level “GX” 7-seater and 8-seater versions have become cheaper by ₹1.33 lakh. They now cost ₹18.66 lakh, compared to ₹19.99 lakh earlier.
The “GX+” versions are down by about ₹1.45 lakh, priced now at ₹20.26 lakh instead of ₹21.71 lakh.
Mid-range “VX” variants are cheaper by ₹1.69 to ₹1.70 lakh, depending on seating capacity.
The top “ZX” variant has also received a reduction of nearly ₹1.81 lakh, making it more attractive for buyers who want premium features.
Toyota Innova Hycross
The 7-seater “G” version has become cheaper by ₹1.03 lakh, now costing ₹18.06 lakh.
The 8-seater “G” version also dropped by about the same amount, at ₹18.11 lakh.
The “GX” variants are down by over ₹1 lakh each.
Even the strong-hybrid electric versions, which already offered better fuel economy, have seen small cuts. One of them is now about ₹60,000 cheaper than before.
Why is this important for customers
For Indian buyers, the price of a vehicle is one of the most important factors in making a purchase. SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and the Innova range are already seen as premium and reliable vehicles, but their high cost makes them out of reach for many families.
With these price cuts, customers now have more options:
Middle-class families who were considering smaller SUVs may now stretch their budget to buy an Innova Crysta or Hycross.
Business owners who want a large, comfortable vehicle for long drives or company use may find the Fortuner more attractive at its new price.
Fleet operators and taxi owners, who often prefer the Innova Crysta for its space and reliability, will also save lakhs of rupees when buying new units.
Impact on the car market
This move is expected to shake up the SUV market in India. Toyota already holds a strong position in the premium SUV and MUV space. With the new prices, it will likely attract even more customers.
Other carmakers may also feel the pressure. Brands that compete with Toyota, such as Mahindra, Tata, and Hyundai, will now face tougher competition because Toyota’s models are priced more attractively.
Car dealers are expecting an increase in footfall at showrooms from late September onwards. Some dealers believe there could even be waiting periods again, especially for high-demand models like the Fortuner Legender and Innova Hycross hybrid.
Expert opinions
Automobile experts believe that this GST simplification is a positive step not just for Toyota but for the entire industry. Taxes had earlier created confusion, as buyers struggled to understand why two vehicles of similar size could fall into different tax brackets. A single rate brings more clarity and fairness.
Experts also point out that India has been seeing a steady rise in the demand for SUVs. Reducing prices could further increase sales, which in turn helps the government collect more revenue overall. Instead of discouraging buyers with high taxes, the government may see greater volumes of vehicles sold.
What this means for the future
The reduction in prices will likely improve Toyota’s sales figures for the second half of 2025 and into 2026. The company has always positioned itself as a brand offering durable, family-friendly vehicles. Now, with more competitive pricing, its reach could expand even further.
It also raises the question of whether the government will extend this simplified GST structure to other types of vehicles in the future. If that happens, Indian buyers may see similar price cuts across different car brands.
The news of Toyota reducing prices on its SUVs has come as a pleasant surprise for car buyers in India. The Fortuner, Innova Crysta, and Innova Hycross have always been admired for their comfort, performance, and reliability, but high prices were often a barrier.
With cuts ranging from ₹1 lakh to nearly ₹3.5 lakh, many customers who were holding back their purchase may now move ahead. For those planning to buy a new SUV this festive season, this change could not have come at a better time.
