Switzerland is facing a moment of deep sorrow after a deadly fire swept through a crowded bar during a New Year’s Eve celebration in the luxury ski resort of Crans-Montana. The blaze killed around 40 people and injured more than 100 others, leaving families, friends, and an entire town in shock.
The fire broke out late on December 31 at the Le Constellation bar, where many young people had gathered to welcome the new year. According to Swiss officials, the fire spread very quickly, trapping people inside. Many of the victims suffered severe burns, making the task of identifying the bodies slow and emotionally painful.
Local authorities said it could take several days before all victims are formally identified. Experts are using dental records and DNA samples to make sure each identification is accurate. Officials stressed that no family would be informed until they are completely certain.
“This information is extremely sensitive,” said Mathias Reynard, head of the Valais regional government. “We must be 100 percent sure before giving answers to families.”
The mayor of Crans-Montana, Nicolas Feraud, said identifying every victim is the top priority. Parents of missing young people have issued emotional appeals for news, while foreign embassies are working urgently to confirm whether their citizens were affected.
Italy and France have confirmed that some of their nationals are missing or injured. Italy has reported a death toll of 47, based on information received from Swiss authorities. Several Italian victims are still missing, while others remain hospitalized. Australia also confirmed that one of its citizens was injured.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Swiss authorities said there is no sign of an attack and believe it was an accident. Early accounts suggest that decorative sparklers or candles may have ignited the ceiling in the bar’s basement.
Crans-Montana, known for skiing, golf, and luxury tourism, has been left stunned. Many residents knew the victims personally. Hundreds gathered near the bar in silence to honor those who lost their lives. Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes were placed along the road leading to the cordoned-off site.
As a mark of respect, Switzerland ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast for five days. Police said they will continue working day and night until every victim is identified.
“You think you are safe here,” said a local teenager at a candlelight vigil. “But something like this can happen anywhere.”
For now, the nation mourns, families wait for answers, and a peaceful resort town struggles to come to terms with a tragedy that has changed it forever.
