Turkish Military Plane Crashes Near Georgia Border

Post by : Meena Rani

A Turkish military cargo plane carrying 20 people crashed near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border on Tuesday, according to Turkey’s Defence Ministry. The C-130 Hercules aircraft was flying back to Turkey from Azerbaijan when the accident occurred. Authorities in both Turkey and Georgia have begun search and rescue operations to find survivors.

The Turkish Defence Ministry released a statement confirming that the C-130 military cargo plane had taken off from Azerbaijan to return home when it crashed near the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan. The ministry also said there were 20 people on board, including the flight crew. Officials said rescue teams were immediately sent to the crash site, and investigations were underway.

Search and rescue operations were launched soon after the crash was reported. The ministry said that all available teams were working in cooperation with Georgian authorities to reach the site. However, difficult weather conditions and rough terrain have slowed down the efforts. Both countries have deployed helicopters, military vehicles, and rescue personnel to locate possible survivors.

Videos circulating on Azerbaijani media appeared to show the plane spinning in the air before crashing into a field, followed by thick black smoke rising into the sky. Another video, said to be from the crash site, showed the burning wreckage as bystanders watched from a distance. Turkish authorities requested that media outlets avoid sharing such videos out of respect for those involved and to prevent the spread of unverified information.

Turkish President Expresses Deep Sorrow

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his sadness over the tragic event. He said Turkey was working closely with Georgian authorities to reach the wreckage. He also referred to the personnel on board as “our martyrs” and offered his condolences to their families. Erdogan added that the nation stood united in grief and that the government would provide all necessary support to the rescue and recovery operations.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev offered his condolences to President Erdogan and the Turkish people. In a message shared on social media, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan was deeply saddened by the crash and that his country would assist Turkey in the rescue mission. Azerbaijan’s close military and diplomatic relations with Turkey have strengthened over the years, and this tragedy once again highlighted their cooperation during difficult times.

Georgian Authorities Confirm the Crash

Georgia’s Interior Ministry confirmed that the plane went down near the Sighnaghi area, about five kilometers from the Georgian border with Azerbaijan. The ministry added that emergency services and air traffic control teams were immediately alerted after the aircraft disappeared from radar. According to Georgia’s air navigation agency, the plane did not send any distress signal before it vanished.

Georgia’s Sakaeronavigatsia air traffic control agency said the C-130 disappeared from radar a few minutes after entering Georgian airspace. The agency confirmed that it had notified the airport in Ganja, Azerbaijan — where the plane had taken off — as well as Turkish authorities. The sudden loss of contact and the absence of any emergency message have raised questions about what caused the crash.

The C-130 Hercules is a four-engine military transport aircraft made by the American company Lockheed Martin. It is widely used by air forces around the world for carrying troops, cargo, and equipment. The aircraft has a strong safety record, but accidents can happen due to weather, technical failure, or human error. Turkey has used this model for many years in both military and humanitarian missions.

Investigation Underway into Cause of Crash

Both Turkey and Georgia have begun a full investigation to find the cause of the crash. Military aviation experts will examine flight data, maintenance records, and weather conditions at the time of the incident. Officials have not yet confirmed whether there are any survivors, and recovery efforts are still ongoing. The area around the crash site has been secured to help investigators collect evidence safely.

The crash has shocked both Turkey and its allies. Messages of sympathy have poured in from several countries. Many people have expressed hope that survivors might still be found. As search teams continue their efforts, the families of those on board are anxiously waiting for updates. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks faced by military personnel in their duties.
