Uber to Add Helicopter Rides via Joby Aviation Partnership

Post by : Meena Rani

Uber is taking a major step toward expanding its transportation services by allowing customers to book helicopter and seaplane rides directly through its app. This move comes after a strengthened partnership with Joby Aviation, a company that develops electric aircraft designed to fly in cities. The integration of these air services is part of a broader plan to provide faster and more efficient travel for city dwellers and frequent travelers.

Joby Aviation and Uber’s Long Partnership

Joby Aviation has been working with Uber since 2019 to explore urban air mobility, which means using small aircraft for short trips in cities. In 2020, Joby took over Uber’s Elevate division, which was focused on developing flying taxis. Now, Joby has further strengthened its collaboration with Uber by acquiring Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business for $125 million. Blade is a well-known company that operates helicopters and seaplanes, mainly in New York and some European cities. This acquisition allows Uber to offer Blade’s services seamlessly through its app.

Blade Air Mobility’s Network and Services

Blade Air Mobility has built a reputation for safe and reliable air transport. Its network includes routes connecting Manhattan to airports like JFK and Newark, as well as popular destinations such as the Hamptons. In 2024, Blade served more than 50,000 passengers. By integrating Blade’s flights into the Uber app, travelers will be able to book their helicopter and seaplane rides in the same way they book Uber cars today. This integration is expected to make city-to-airport travel faster and more convenient for passengers.

Introducing Joby’s Electric Aircraft

While Uber will first offer Blade’s existing helicopter and seaplane flights, the long-term goal is to introduce Joby Aviation’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. These small electric planes can carry four passengers and a pilot, travel up to 200 miles per hour, and cover 100 miles on a single charge. They are designed to operate quietly and produce no emissions, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional helicopters.

Global Expansion Plans

Uber and Joby Aviation plan to launch the integrated service in 2026. The first cities to receive this service will likely include New York, Los Angeles, and Dubai. If the rollout goes well, the companies plan to expand to international hubs such as London and Tokyo. The aim is to create a global network where passengers can easily book air travel directly through the Uber app.

Pricing and Convenience

Prices for helicopter and seaplane rides are expected to be similar to current Blade fares. For example, a flight from Manhattan to JFK or Newark airports typically costs between $195 and $225, depending on timing and availability. Passengers will be able to see schedules, book tickets, and pay through the Uber app, making it a seamless experience comparable to hailing a ride with a car.

Focus on Sustainability

Introducing Joby’s electric aircraft aligns with growing global interest in sustainable transportation. Unlike traditional helicopters, these aircraft do not release greenhouse gases and generate minimal noise. This approach addresses environmental concerns while providing a cleaner and quieter option for city air travel.

The partnership between Uber and Joby Aviation marks a major milestone in the development of urban air mobility. As the service grows, the companies may also explore new technologies like autonomous flight systems and expanded electric aircraft fleets. Over time, these innovations could transform the way people move in and around cities, offering faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly options than traditional ground transportation.
