UK New Car Sales Hit Strongest August Since 2018 as Electric Vehicle Demand Grows

Post by : Saif

UK new car sales recorded their strongest August since 2018, with more than 90,000 new vehicles registered during the month, according to preliminary industry data.

New car registrations increased by around 13% year-on-year, showing continued strength in the British automotive market. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) also maintained a significant share of new registrations, accounting for around 30% of sales in August.

UK Car Registrations Rise in August

Preliminary figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that more than 90,000 new cars were registered in the UK during August.

August is traditionally a smaller month for the British car market, but this year's figures represent the strongest performance for the month in eight years.

The increase suggests that consumer and business demand for new vehicles remains relatively resilient despite wider economic pressures.

Electric Vehicles Hold 30% Market Share

Battery electric vehicles accounted for approximately 30% of UK new car registrations in August.

For the first eight months of the year, electric vehicles represented around 26% of the overall market.

However, both figures remain below the UK government's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires manufacturers to reach a 33% share of zero-emission vehicle sales in 2026.

Different Industry Data Shows Similar EV Growth

Separate figures from New AutoMotive also indicated that battery electric vehicles represented roughly 30% of new UK car registrations in August.

That dataset showed overall new car registrations increasing 17.5% compared with the same month a year earlier.

However, SMMT and New AutoMotive use different data sources and calculation methods, meaning their figures are not directly identical.

Final August Figures Expected

The preliminary SMMT figures are expected to be followed by final registration data. The final numbers will provide a clearer picture of the UK's August vehicle market and the performance of electric vehicles.

The strong August result comes as automakers continue adjusting their sales strategies to meet Britain's growing electric vehicle requirements and changing consumer demand.
