U.S. Approves $93 Million Sale of Javelin Missiles and Excalibur Artillery to India

U.S. Approves $93 Million Sale of Javelin Missiles and Excalibur Artillery to India

Post by : Saif

The United States has approved the sale of advanced military equipment worth $93 million to India, marking an important development in defense relations between the two countries. The sale includes the Javelin anti-tank missile system and Excalibur precision-guided artillery projectiles, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed on Wednesday.

This is the first major defense purchase India is making through Washington’s Foreign Military Sales programme since relations became tense in August. Ties had cooled after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent as a penalty for New Delhi’s continued purchases of oil from Russia.

Despite the friction, defense cooperation between the two nations continues to advance. Earlier in November, India placed a new order for fighter jet engines built by General Electric to support the expansion of its locally produced Tejas combat aircraft fleet.

According to the DSCA, the sale is expected to strengthen the long-term strategic partnership between the United States and India. In its statement, the agency said the decision supports the United States’ foreign policy and national security goals by helping improve India’s defense capability. It added that India remains an important partner that contributes to political stability, peace, and economic development in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia.

India has requested to buy up to 216 Excalibur tactical artillery rounds and 100 units of the Javelin missile system. India already uses Excalibur ammunition in its M-777 Howitzer guns, which are deployed in several strategic military locations. The new purchase is expected to improve India's battlefield precision and enhance modern capabilities within its armed forces.

The Javelin system, widely used by several armies around the world, is known for its ability to destroy tanks and armored vehicles with high accuracy. The inclusion of this system is likely to boost India’s readiness and strengthen defense preparedness in critical border areas.

The move also demonstrates the growing defense cooperation between the two nations, even at a time when economic and trade disagreements remain unresolved. Observers believe the sale highlights Washington’s continued interest in supporting India as a strong security partner in a region facing multiple strategic challenges.

As geopolitical competition increases in the Indo-Pacific, both countries appear focused on maintaining a strong defense partnership. The new military sale is seen as another step in reinforcing long-term cooperation and shared strategic goals.
