U.S. Tractor and Combine Sales Drop Canada Sees Growth in July

Post by : Armust Desk

Farm equipment sales in July 2025 showed two very different stories across North America. The United States witnessed a steep decline in sales of combines and tractors, while Canada experienced modest growth. These changes highlight the cautious approach farmers are taking amid uncertain economic conditions.

Big Drop in U.S. Combine Sales

Combined sales in the United States fell sharply. Sales were down 43.7% in July 2025, with only 359 combines sold compared to 638 in July 2024. Year-to-date, just 1,871 combines have been sold, a big fall of 43.4% from the 3,308 sold by the same time last year.

This decline shows that many farmers are holding back on investing in large and costly machines like combines. Inventories also remain high, with 1,138 combines available at the start of July.

Tractor Sales Show Mixed Results in the U.S.

Overall tractor sales in the U.S. fell 4.9% in July 2025, with 17,614 tractors sold compared to 18,519 in July 2024. For the year so far, 120,354 tractors have been sold, down 9.9% from 133,541 sold last year.

Breaking it down by horsepower range:

  • 2WD Sub-40 hp tractors: These smaller tractors, often used by smaller farms, slipped slightly. Sales dropped 1.7% in July, with 10,793 sold compared to 10,978 last year. Year-to-date sales are down 7.7%. Inventory for this category began at 63,927 in July.

  • 2WD 40–100 hp tractors: This category showed a small rise of 0.8% in July, with 5,146 sold compared to 5,107 last year. But for the year so far, sales are down 6.3%, with 29,465 sold compared to 31,459 in 2024. Inventory stood at 28,402 in July.

  • 2WD 100-plus hp tractors: Larger tractors in this group took a major hit. Sales dropped 29.3% in July, with 1,427 sold compared to 2,019 last year. Year-to-date sales are down 26.7%, with 10,093 sold compared to 13,776 in 2024. Inventory started at 8,461 in July.

  • 4WD tractors: These powerful machines also faced a steep drop. Sales were down 40.2% in July, with 248 sold compared to 415 last year. Year-to-date, sales are down 38.8%, with 1,430 sold compared to 2,337 last year. Inventory for this group was 762 at the beginning of July.

Canada Shows Growth in Sales

Unlike the United States, Canada’s sales numbers told a more positive story. In July 2025, combined sales in Canada grew by 11.4%, showing stronger demand from Canadian farmers. Sales of 2WD tractors also rose by 3% compared to July 2024.

This growth suggests Canadian farmers are slightly more confident about investing in new machinery compared to their U.S. counterparts.

Farmers Taking a Careful Approach

Experts say these numbers reflect how farmers are thinking carefully about their money. With the cost of farming equipment running high and with many farmers facing unpredictable crop prices, they are being cautious. Instead of rushing to buy new equipment, many are taking a “measured approach” to balance their needs with the uncertain economy.

“Farmers across North America are carefully looking at their capital assets and deciding what is really necessary for their operations,” explained one industry leader.

What This Means for the Farming Sector

The farming industry depends heavily on machinery, from small tractors for everyday tasks to massive combines for harvesting crops. The sales drop in the United States points to financial concerns, with many farmers trying to make the most out of the equipment they already own.

At the same time, Canada’s growth shows there is still room for investment where market conditions are more stable. If the trend continues, equipment makers may adjust their strategies, focusing more on areas that show demand while carefully watching U.S. markets.

The rest of the year will be important for equipment manufacturers and farmers alike. If crop prices rise or economic conditions improve, farmers may feel more confident to invest in new machines. But if uncertainty continues, cautious spending may remain the trend in the U.S., while Canada could see steadier growth.
