Vizhinjam Port Handles 1 Million TEUs in Just 9 Months

Post by : Armust Desk

Vizhinjam International Seaport, located near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, has achieved a remarkable milestone by handling over 1 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in just nine months since it began commercial operations. This achievement surpasses all initial expectations and positions India as a major player in global shipping and trade.

Strategic Location and Global Importance

The port is strategically located around 10 nautical miles from the busy east-west international shipping route that connects Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. This prime location allows ships to transfer containers efficiently without unnecessary detours or delays. By serving as a transshipment hub, Vizhinjam Port provides international shipping companies with an attractive alternative to other ports in the region, giving it a strong competitive advantage.

Advanced Infrastructure and Facilities

Vizhinjam Port features a deep-water harbor with a natural depth of 24 meters. This depth allows the port to accommodate Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), which are among the largest ships in the world. The port’s first phase includes modern equipment such as 24 automated yard cranes and eight semi-automated ship-to-shore cranes. It is one of the first fully automated ports in South Asia, which ensures quick and efficient handling of cargo, reducing waiting times for ships.

Surpassing All Expectations

The commercial operations of the port officially began on December 3, 2024. Initially, the port was expected to handle around 300,000 TEUs in its first year. However, within just nine months, Vizhinjam Port successfully handled over 1 million TEUs, more than three times the initial projection. This rapid growth demonstrates the port’s efficiency, world-class facilities, and strategic significance.

Welcoming the World’s Largest Ships

Since its opening, the port has welcomed over 460 vessels, including 26 ULCVs measuring nearly 400 meters in length. The arrival of such massive ships highlights the port’s capacity and capability to handle large-scale international trade. Notable vessels like the MSC Irina, one of the largest container ships globally, have called at Vizhinjam, marking a historic milestone in India’s shipping history.

Sustainability and Future Growth

The port was designed with sustainability in mind. Renewable energy sources are integrated into the operations, and environmental safeguards have been strictly followed. Future expansion plans include constructing additional berths, extending the breakwater, and improving road and rail connectivity. These developments will help increase the port’s capacity to handle up to 5 million TEUs annually, making it a major global shipping hub.

Empowering Local Communities

Vizhinjam Port has created significant employment opportunities for local communities. Women from the nearby areas are actively employed in port operations, while skill development programs are training local youth for various roles. This ensures that the port’s growth benefits the surrounding communities and promotes inclusive development.

With its strategic location, state-of-the-art facilities, and efficient operations, Vizhinjam Port is set to become one of India’s most important maritime gateways. By continuing to expand and improve its infrastructure, the port will play a crucial role in boosting India’s global trade, economic growth, and connectivity with international markets.
