Yamaha India is preparing to lower the prices of two of its popular motorcycles, the R3 and the MT‑03, by around ₹30,000. This decision comes after recent changes in India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST), which are expected to reduce the cost of imported motorcycles. The move aims to make these bikes more appealing to young and mid-level buyers looking for high-performance motorcycles at competitive prices.
Why Only R3 and MT‑03?
The R3 and MT‑03 are part of Yamaha’s premium motorcycle segment in India. Unlike many other Yamaha bikes that are made locally, these two models are imported fully built. This means they attract higher taxes and import duties, which makes them more expensive than other Yamaha motorcycles.
Earlier this year, Yamaha revised the prices of multiple motorcycles and scooters. While some models became costlier, others saw price cuts. For example, the R15 received a price drop of around ₹17,581, which was welcomed by buyers. At that time, the R3 and MT‑03 prices remained unchanged.
Previous Price Cuts
Yamaha has previously reduced the prices of these two motorcycles. In past years, the company had lowered prices by up to ₹1.1 lakh, bringing the R3 to around ₹3.60 lakh and the MT‑03 to about ₹3.50 lakh (ex-showroom). These reductions made high-performance bikes more accessible to enthusiasts.
With the new GST revisions, the government has lowered taxes on imported motorcycles, creating an opportunity for Yamaha to cut prices again. The R3 may cost around ₹3.30 lakh, and the MT‑03 could drop to ₹3.20 lakh (ex-showroom).
Yamaha R3: Sports Bike Features
The R3 is a sports motorcycle designed for riders who want a mix of style, comfort, and speed. Key features include:
Engine: 321cc, parallel twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC
Power: 42 bhp
Torque: 29.5 Nm
Transmission: 6-speed gearbox
Smooth acceleration and strong highway performance
Advanced suspension and disc brakes with ABS
Full digital instrument cluster
The R3 is ideal for both city and highway rides, offering a blend of performance and comfort.
Yamaha MT‑03: Naked Street Bike
The MT‑03 is a naked street bike, focusing on agility and easy handling in urban traffic. Features include:
Engine: Same 321cc as R3
Upright seating position for city commuting
Lightweight frame for better maneuverability
Advanced suspension system
Dual-channel ABS for safety
Digital instrument display showing speed, rpm, fuel, and gear
The MT‑03 is preferred by riders who enjoy sharp handling and quick maneuvers, making it excellent for city roads.
Competition in India
The R3 and MT‑03 compete with several other premium motorcycles in India:
KTM 390 Duke and RC 390
TVS Apache RR 310
Triumph Speed 400 and Thruxton 400
Recently, some of these competitors increased their prices due to GST changes. By reducing R3 and MT‑03 prices, Yamaha gains a competitive edge in the market.
Reliability, Comfort, and Safety
Both motorcycles are known for:
Reliable engine performance
Comfortable riding ergonomics
Smooth handling
Advanced braking system with ABS
Suspension is designed to absorb road shocks
These features make them suitable for beginners as well as experienced riders, combining performance with safety and comfort.
Yamaha’s After-Sales Support
Yamaha continues to provide strong support for buyers through:
Wide service network across India
Warranty programs for motorcycles
Financing options to make ownership easier
This ensures that owning an R3 or MT‑03 is convenient, and maintenance and spare parts are readily available.
The upcoming ₹30,000 price reduction for Yamaha R3 and MT‑03 motorcycles is likely to attract more buyers in India. The move comes at a time when competitors have increased their prices. With advanced features, strong performance, and now a more affordable price, these motorcycles are expected to see increased interest from young riders and motorcycle enthusiasts.
