Zelenskiy Visits Troops Near Zaporizhzhia as Russian Pressure Increases

Post by : Sameer Saifi

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited troops near the Zaporizhzhia front on Thursday as Russian forces increased pressure in several areas. The fighting in the southeast has become very intense, and Ukraine is working hard to protect its defence lines.

Zelenskiy said the area near the village of Orikhiv is one of the most difficult parts of the front. He explained that Russia wants to move closer to the city of Zaporizhzhia, which is very important for Ukraine. He said the city must be protected at all costs. During the visit, he awarded medals to soldiers and talked with commanders about how to strengthen the defence.

Russian forces have not made any big breakthroughs recently, but they are slowly moving forward. They already control about 19% of Ukraine. Their main targets now include the city of Pokrovsk in the east and areas near Kupiansk in the northeast. Experts say that in the last two months, many of Russia’s gains have been in the southeastern region near Huliapole and Velyka Novosilka. They also say Ukraine’s shortage of soldiers is giving Russia small but important advantages. If Ukraine does not fix these gaps, Russia could move closer to Zaporizhzhia and even cut off some Ukrainian units in the south.

Earlier this week, Ukraine’s top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said the situation in parts of the Zaporizhzhia region has become worse. He said Russian forces are using foggy weather to hide their movements and search for weak spots in Ukraine’s defence. Syrskyi said Pokrovsk remains the main point of Russia’s offensive, but Ukraine is trying to push back to reduce pressure.

During his visit, Zelenskiy spoke to soldiers in a bunker and met military leaders. He also placed flowers for fallen soldiers. He discussed what Ukraine needs to do next, including more staff, stronger positions, and more equipment.

At the same time, Ukraine continues to strike Russian targets. The Ukrainian military said it attacked an oil terminal in occupied Crimea, an oil depot in occupied Zaporizhzhia, and other military sites during the night. Ukraine also used a new long-range cruise missile called the Flamingo, which can travel very long distances.

Zelenskiy’s visit happened while his government is facing a corruption scandal in the energy sector. Many Ukrainians are angry because they are struggling with power cuts caused by Russian attacks, while hearing about corruption inside the system. Ukraine is also targeting Russian oil infrastructure to reduce Russia’s income and fuel supplies.
