June 26, 2025 | Munich — At the heart of Automatica 2025, Europe’s premier automation and robotics trade fair, ABB Robotics made headlines by unveiling its next-generation large industrial robots alongside a new line of heavy-duty autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). These innovations reflect ABB’s strategic push to meet the growing demands of the electric vehicle (EV), logistics, and general manufacturing sectors, where precision, payload capacity, and automation are increasingly critical.
ABB’s announcements demonstrate not only the company's technical capabilities but also its vision for reshaping the landscape of factory and warehouse automation.

Leading the launch are two new large industrial robots — the IRB 7710 and IRB 7720 — which extend ABB’s portfolio of heavy-duty robots tailored for high-performance applications such as automotive assembly, large-part handling, and EV battery manufacturing.

These robots build on the mechanical platform of ABB’s proven IRB 6700 and IRB 7600 series but deliver up to 25% more energy efficiency and improved motion control with ABB’s OmniCore controller.

  • Payload capacity: Ranging from 150 to 620 kilograms
  • Reach: Up to 3.1 meters
  • Energy savings: Achieved through new motors and drives
  • Precision and flexibility: Enhanced by integrated vision and AI-based path optimization

These capabilities make the IRB 7710 and 7720 ideal for tasks such as spot welding, battery module installation, and heavy material handling — critical processes for EV production lines and large-format manufacturing.

These capabilities make the IRB 7710 and 7720 ideal for tasks such as spot welding, battery module installation, and heavy material handling — critical processes for EV production lines and large-format manufacturing.

A key highlight in ABB’s pitch is the OmniCore controller, the digital backbone of its robot line. With real-time connectivity, edge AI processing, and ultra-low latency, OmniCore enables seamless coordination between industrial arms, AMRs, and the broader digital factory.

Through AI-enabled vision systems, predictive maintenance tools, and unified programming platforms, ABB is creating a “plug-and-produce” robotic ecosystem that lowers integration time and cost for customers.

ABB’s new portfolio directly targets the explosive growth in electric vehicle manufacturing, where lightweighting, precision assembly, and modular production lines are vital. The heavier payload capacity and energy-efficient design of the IRB 7710/7720 make them ideal for handling EV battery packs and chassis components.

In the logistics sector, the Flexley AMRs support warehouse automation trends such as micro-fulfillment, multi-floor delivery, and zero-latency dispatching, which are reshaping supply chain operations worldwide.

Moreover, ABB is doubling down on sustainability, touting up to 20% energy savings across its new robot lines, aligned with global decarbonization goals and the European Green Deal.

At Automatica 2025 in Munich, ABB Robotics unveiled a groundbreaking suite of automation solutions, introducing two powerful industrial robots — the IRB 7710 and IRB 7720 — alongside new heavy-duty autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), the Flexley Tug and Flexley Stack. These innovations mark a significant expansion in ABB’s robotics portfolio, aimed at supporting high-demand sectors such as electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, logistics, and large-scale industrial production.

The new IRB robots boast payload capacities ranging from 150 to 620 kg, enhanced reach, and up to 25% improved energy efficiency, making them well-suited for tasks like battery assembly, spot welding, and material handling. The AMRs, designed for payloads up to 5,000 kg, utilize ABB’s Visual SLAM navigation and Autonomous Mission Control for flexible, infrastructure-free operation in complex factory environments.

Marc Segura, President of ABB Robotics, emphasized the strategic vision behind the launch, stating, “With the launch of these advanced robots and AMRs, we’re enabling manufacturers to do more with less — more productivity, more flexibility, and less environmental impact. The future of automation is agile, intelligent, and autonomous — and that’s what we’re delivering today.”

This development is seen by industry analysts as a direct response to the mounting pressure on global manufacturers, particularly in the EV sector, where companies like Tesla, Rivian, and traditional OEMs are accelerating automation to meet growing demand and streamline operations. ABB’s move reinforces its commitment to building sustainable, scalable, and intelligent automation systems for the factories and warehouses of the future.
