The Uttar Pradesh government has started a big step to reduce road accidents using Artificial Intelligence (AI). This new project is being done at zero cost by public sector company ITI Limited and U.S.-based firm mLogica. The aim is to make roads safer by studying accidents and finding ways to stop them.
This is a pilot project. That means it is starting on a small scale to test if it works well. If successful, it will be used across the state.
The AI system will collect and study many types of information like:
Where accidents happen the most (called blackspots)
How vehicles move (vehicle telematics)
Weather conditions during accidents
Crash reports from police
Road and traffic patterns
All this information will help the Transport Department understand why accidents happen and how to stop them.
This project is part of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s goal to use data and technology in governance. The state has already set aside ₹10 crore in the 2025–26 budget to support this effort.
With this system, the government wants to:
Find the main causes of fatal accidents
Make better policies for road safety
Reduce deaths on roads
Use technology to offer quicker and fair services
The AI engine will be connected to different services, such as:
Faceless driving licence and vehicle permit system
E-challan (digital traffic fine) system
Vahan and Sarathi (vehicle and driver databases)
Revenue collection and enforcement monitoring
This means people can expect faster services without going to offices and better transparency in how rules are applied.
The AI engine will also help by:
Sending automatic alerts to drivers for expiring documents or unpaid taxes
Giving risk scores based on driving history
Helping the government take action quickly in case of accidents or violations
If the project shows good results, Uttar Pradesh could become a model for other states. With AI helping in road safety, licence management, traffic fines, and transport data handling, UP is working towards becoming a leader in digital governance.
Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh said that work has already started. Teams from ITI and mLogica are working closely with the department's IT, road safety, and enforcement units to make this project a success.
This new AI-based project is a step towards saving lives and making roads safer. By using smart technology, Uttar Pradesh is not only fighting accidents but also creating a transparent and modern transport system for its citizens.
