Boeing has received a major boost with a new contract from the U.S. Air Force worth $2.47 billion. The deal, announced on Tuesday, is for the production of 15 additional KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tankers, strengthening the Air Force’s long-term modernization plans.
This latest contract follows a similar agreement last year when Boeing was awarded $2.38 billion to deliver another set of 15 KC-46A aircraft. The back-to-back awards show that the Air Force remains committed to expanding its tanker fleet, which plays a critical role in extending the range and endurance of military aircraft during operations.
The KC-46A Pegasus is designed to refuel U.S. and allied aircraft in mid-air, a capability that is essential for global missions. However, the aircraft has faced several challenges since its development. Issues such as foreign object debris found inside planes, supplier-related problems, and technical defects caused delays and raised concerns about quality control. Despite these difficulties, deliveries have continued steadily.
Since 2019, the U.S. Air Force has already received 98 KC-46A tankers, according to Boeing. Each new batch helps replace aging refueling aircraft that have been in service for decades. The Pegasus not only provides refueling support but can also transport cargo, passengers, and medical evacuation teams, making it a versatile asset for the military.
Interest in the KC-46A is also growing internationally. In August, Israel’s defense ministry announced plans to purchase two KC-46A tankers in a deal worth about $500 million. This reflects confidence in the aircraft’s strategic value despite its early setbacks.
For Boeing, the new $2.47 billion contract is a significant win at a time when the company has been working to rebuild trust after a series of technical issues across its aerospace programs. The KC-46A program remains one of its most important military projects.
As the Air Force continues to expand and modernize its tanker fleet, Boeing’s role remains central. The latest contract signals ongoing cooperation between the two, aiming to ensure that the U.S. military maintains strong refueling capabilities for missions around the world.
