China on Saturday launched a new Coast Guard patrol east of Taiwan, replacing an earlier task force in a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Taipei and heightened concerns among several Western nations. Beijing said the operation is aimed at conducting "law enforcement patrols" in what it described as its jurisdictional waters, while Taiwan rejected the claim, insisting China has no authority over the island or its surrounding waters.
China Says Patrol Will Protect Maritime Rights
In a statement, the China Coast Guard said the new fleet would carry out regular law enforcement patrols and strengthen its presence in the waters east of Taiwan.
Chinese authorities said the operation is intended to safeguard what Beijing describes as its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has increased military and coast guard activities around the island in recent years.
Taiwan Deploys Coast Guard Ships
Taiwan's Coast Guard confirmed that it is closely monitoring the Chinese vessels and has deployed two of its own ships to shadow the patrol.
According to Taiwanese officials, the two Chinese coast guard vessels were operating about 54 nautical miles east of Hualien, home to one of Taiwan's major air bases. Officials said the ships remained outside Taiwan's restricted waters but were being continuously monitored.
Taiwan also reaffirmed that it would take all necessary measures to protect its maritime security and national sovereignty if Chinese vessels attempted to interfere with Taiwanese ships.
Second Patrol in a Month
This is the second time in about a month that China has deployed coast guard vessels off Taiwan's eastern coast.
Unlike previous operations that primarily involved the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Beijing has increasingly relied on its coast guard to reinforce its territorial claims. Taiwanese officials have described the strategy as a form of "lawfare," arguing that China is attempting to create a legal basis for expanding its jurisdiction in disputed waters.
International Concerns Continue to Grow
China's increased coast guard presence has attracted attention from the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, all of which have expressed concern over rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
The latest patrol follows China's June operation, which Beijing said was linked to plans by Japan and the Philippines to begin formal maritime boundary talks. China argued that those discussions involved waters it claims near Taiwan.
Taiwan Rejects China's Jurisdiction Claims
Earlier this week, Taiwan instructed its commercial and civilian vessels operating off the island's eastern coast to ignore any inspection or boarding requests from the China Coast Guard.
Taiwanese authorities said Coast Guard vessels would intervene if necessary to prevent Chinese ships from boarding or inspecting Taiwanese vessels.
Taipei maintains that the People's Republic of China has no sovereignty or jurisdiction over Taiwan or its surrounding waters, rejecting Beijing's territorial claims.
Maritime Dispute Remains a Regional Flashpoint
The latest patrol underscores continuing tensions across the Taiwan Strait as China increases pressure on the self-governed island through military exercises, coast guard operations and diplomatic efforts.
With regional powers closely watching developments, the situation remains one of the most sensitive security issues in the Indo-Pacific.
