Germany has said it currently has no plans to purchase additional F-35 fighter jets, even after reports suggested that talks might be taking place. A government spokesperson made it clear that no decision has been made.
The F-35 jets are produced by the American defense company Lockheed Martin. These aircraft are among the most advanced fighter jets in the world. They are designed with modern technology that allows them to avoid radar detection and carry out complex missions.
Earlier reports claimed that Berlin might be considering ordering more than 35 extra jets. However, government officials responded by saying there are no current plans and no official decision. While discussions may happen, nothing has been finalized.
Germany had already ordered 35 F-35 jets in 2022. These jets are expected to begin delivery later this year. The earlier purchase was part of Germany’s effort to modernize its air force and strengthen its role in NATO defense planning.
The F-35 plays an important role in NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement. Some member countries host U.S. nuclear weapons and rely on compatible aircraft to carry them if needed. Germany’s purchase of the F-35 was seen as a key step in replacing its older Tornado jets.
Defense spending has become a major topic in Germany in recent years. After the start of the Ukraine conflict, Berlin increased its military budget and promised to strengthen its armed forces. However, every new purchase must still go through careful review because of high costs and long-term commitments.
Buying advanced fighter jets is expensive. Each aircraft costs millions of dollars, and there are also costs for maintenance, training, and upgrades. That is why governments often move slowly before approving new defense contracts.
At the same time, global security concerns continue to shape military decisions. European countries are reviewing their defense plans in light of rising tensions and ongoing conflicts.
For now, Germany’s position remains clear: there is no confirmed plan to expand its F-35 fleet beyond the 35 jets already ordered. Whether that changes in the future will depend on security needs, budget decisions, and political agreement.
The discussion shows how defense planning is a careful balance between security, cost, and international cooperation. As deliveries of the first batch of jets begin, attention will remain on whether Berlin chooses to expand its air power further.
