Govt okays doubling Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat rail line at ₹3,169 Cr

The Government of India has approved a major railway project that will change the way people travel across three important eastern states—Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has cleared the plan to double the railway track on the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat section.

The project will cover a distance of 177 kilometers and will be built at a cost of ₹3,169 crore. This decision is part of the government’s larger efforts to improve railway infrastructure, reduce congestion, and provide faster, more reliable services to millions of passengers.

What “Doubling” of the Railway Line Means

At present, the railway line between Bhagalpur, Dumka, and Rampurhat has only a single track. This means that trains traveling in opposite directions cannot move at the same time on most parts of the line. One train must wait at a station or siding until the other passes. This often causes delays and reduces the number of trains that can be run on the route.

By creating a double line, trains will be able to move in both directions without waiting. This will not only save time but will also allow Indian Railways to run more trains for both passengers and goods. For local travelers, it means fewer delays, more frequency, and greater reliability. For businesses, it means faster transport of raw materials and finished goods.

Geographic Spread and Areas Covered

The Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat line connects important regions in three states:

  • Bihar: The line starts from Bhagalpur, an important city in Bihar known for its silk industry and historic importance.

  • Jharkhand: It passes through the Santhal Pargana region, covering districts such as Dumka and Godda.

  • West Bengal: It reaches Rampurhat in Birbhum district, a key junction that connects with major routes leading to Kolkata and north Bengal.

Altogether, the project covers five districts across the three states. It directly benefits the people of 441 villages.

According to estimates, the project will positively impact around 28.72 lakh people—that is, nearly 2.9 million people who live in the surrounding regions.

Economic Benefits of the Project

The doubling of this railway line is expected to bring wide-ranging economic advantages:

  • Better Trade and Commerce:

  • Farmers will find it easier to send their crops and produce to larger markets. Small industries in Banka, Dumka, and Godda will benefit from faster transportation. Bhagalpur, known for its silk, will also gain from the quicker movement of textiles to bigger cities.

  • Boost to Employment:

  • During construction, thousands of workers, engineers, and technicians will be employed. After the project is completed, improved train services may create new opportunities in transport, tourism, and small businesses.

  • Ease of Goods Movement:

  • The line will support faster movement of coal, minerals, agricultural products, and other goods. This will reduce costs for businesses and help local industries grow.

  • Connectivity with Larger Network:

  • Rampurhat in West Bengal is well connected with major routes leading to Kolkata, north Bengal, and even the northeast. Bhagalpur, on the other hand, connects to important towns of Bihar. With a double line, the link between these points becomes stronger, making the whole network more efficient.

Social and Cultural Impact

Railways are not only about transport; they also influence social and cultural life. The doubling of this line will help people in many ways:

  • Tourism and Pilgrimage: The region has famous religious places such as Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar (Jharkhand) and Tarapith Shakti Peeth in West Bengal. These places attract millions of devotees every year. With better railway connectivity, reaching these holy places will become easier and faster, encouraging more visitors.

  • Education and Jobs: Students traveling for higher education will benefit from more frequent trains. Job seekers moving to larger towns will also find travel simpler and more reliable.

  • Healthcare Access: Many villages in these districts lack advanced medical facilities. With better trains, patients and their families can reach hospitals in cities more quickly during emergencies.

Connection to PM Gati Shakti Master Plan

This project is a part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, a national program designed to improve connectivity across India. The idea is to coordinate different forms of transport—railways, highways, ports, and airports—so that goods and people can move faster and more efficiently.

By doubling this railway line, the government is working toward reducing bottlenecks, saving time, cutting fuel costs, and making the economy more productive. This also shows the focus on developing regions like Santhal Pargana in Jharkhand, which has often been left behind in infrastructure growth.

Financial Details

The entire project will cost ₹3,169 crore. The funds will cover track doubling, signaling, electrification, and construction of new bridges and culverts where needed. While the cost is high, the long-term benefits—economic growth, employment, faster travel—are expected to outweigh the investment.

Challenges Ahead

While the project is promising, it will also face challenges:

  • Land Acquisition: Building a new track will require more land. Ensuring fair compensation to farmers and landowners will be important.

  • Environmental Concerns: Parts of the line pass through areas with greenery and rivers. Care will need to be taken to minimize environmental damage.

  • Timely Completion: Large railway projects often face delays. To ensure benefits reach people quickly, strict monitoring will be needed.

Voices from the Region

Residents of the area have welcomed the announcement. Farmers in Banka district believe that with faster trains, they can sell their produce in larger markets without worrying about delays. Shopkeepers in Dumka say that better railway service will bring more visitors and boost their business. Devotees of Baba Baidyanath Dham are hopeful that smoother connectivity will make pilgrimage easier, especially during the annual Shravan fair, when lakhs of people travel to the temple.

Long-Term Vision

The doubling of the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line is not just about building another track. It is part of a broader vision to bring eastern India closer to national growth. By improving connectivity in areas that were once considered remote, the government aims to bridge the gap between rural and urban India.

In the future, better railway facilities could encourage new industries to set up in the region. Tourism will grow as pilgrims and visitors travel more comfortably. Students and workers will move more easily for education and jobs. All of this can transform the social and economic life of the Santhal Pargana and nearby districts.

The approval of ₹3,169 crore for doubling the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line marks a turning point for Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Covering 177 kilometers, the project will directly benefit nearly 29 lakh people in 441 villages. It will reduce delays, allow more trains to run, and improve connections to important cities and religious centers.

As part of the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan, this project is a clear step toward modernizing India’s railway system and ensuring that development reaches every corner of the country. If completed on time, it will bring both immediate relief and long-term growth to the people of the region.
