Electric vehicle sales increased sharply across several European markets in July as high fuel prices, government incentives and a wider range of affordable models encouraged more consumers to move away from petrol and diesel cars.
Data provided to Reuters showed that EV registrations increased 13% year-on-year in July across 16 European markets, representing more than 90% of car sales in the European Union and European Free Trade Association markets.
Electric vehicles accounted for 25.7% of new car sales across those markets during the month.
Rising fuel costs have become an important factor behind the growing interest in electric vehicles.
Consumers are increasingly looking for alternatives that can reduce their exposure to changing petrol and diesel prices. EV owners can also benefit from lower running costs, particularly when they have access to home charging.
Renault UK managing director Adam Wood said consumers were increasingly viewing electric cars as a way to protect themselves from fuel price volatility.
Renault's UK electric vehicle orders have grown significantly. EVs represented more than half of the company's orders in July, compared with around 10% of sales two years earlier.

A growing selection of lower-priced electric vehicles is also helping expand the market.
Renault's electric Renault 5 became Britain's best-selling electric car in July. The company is also preparing to launch an electric Twingo later this year with a starting price below £20,000 before any potential government subsidy.
Chinese manufacturers are also expanding their presence with competitively priced electric models, giving European consumers more options.
Electric vehicle sales across the European Union increased 40.5% during the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2025.
More than 1.2 million EVs were sold during the first six months, representing 20.7% of total new-car sales in the EU.
Online marketplaces have also recorded growing interest in electric cars.
OLX reported that EV enquiries increased substantially in several European markets after the conflict in Iran contributed to higher fuel prices. Searches and enquiries rose particularly strongly in France, Romania, Portugal and Poland.
France has emerged as one of the strongest markets for electric vehicles.
EVs accounted for 29% of new-car sales in France during the year through July.
In July alone, electric vehicles represented a record 35% of new registrations, compared with 17% during the same month a year earlier.
Government support has played an important role in this growth. France's social leasing programme provides subsidies to eligible lower-income consumers, helping make electric vehicles more affordable.
Growing availability and lower prices appear to be improving consumer confidence in electric vehicle technology.
A late-July survey by German online marketplace Carwow found that 62% of respondents believed switching to an EV was the best long-term response to persistently high fuel costs.
Industry analysts say continued improvements in vehicle technology and a wider choice of models could further accelerate adoption.
Electric vehicle trends in Europe differ significantly from those in the United States.
US EV sales have faced greater pressure following the end of a federal EV tax incentive. Although quarterly sales increased during the second quarter, they remained below the level recorded a year earlier.
Cox Automotive expects US EV sales to decline during the year, with electric vehicles accounting for a much smaller share of the overall market than in several European countries.
Despite strong sales growth, limited public charging infrastructure remains one of Europe's biggest obstacles to wider EV adoption.
Millions of people live in apartments or homes without private parking and cannot easily install a home charging system.
Industry experts say expanding public charging networks will be essential if Europe wants electric vehicle sales to continue growing at their current pace.
For now, however, high fuel prices, government incentives and the arrival of more affordable models are giving Europe's EV market significant momentum.
