Hongqi Reclaims Glory and Sets Sights on Global Markets

Post by : Saif

Hongqi’s sales have grown rapidly. In 2017, the brand sold fewer than 5,000 cars. By 2024, sales reached about 412,000—a 17.4% increase over the previous year, far outpacing China’s average auto industry growth of 5.8%. The brand aims for around 500,000 sales in 2025, driven by EVs and plug-in hybrids. Looking further ahead, Hongqi plans to reach a target of one million cars, although no specific timeline was given.

Global Expansion Plans

With competition fierce in China, Hongqi sees international markets as a key growth area. FAW has set a goal for a quarter of Hongqi’s sales to come from abroad by 2030. In November 2024, Hongqi shipped its first batch of 600 EVs to Europe and now plans to offer 15 models in 25 European markets by 2028.

Markets like Germany, known for loyalty to Mercedes and BMW, will be challenging. However, Hongqi plans to attract buyers with advanced technology, such as the AI cockpit system in its Tiangong EV lineup, which includes voice-activated control, seat memory settings, and mood-based music playlists.

Hongqi has also entered Mexico and the Middle East, selling luxury Golden Sunflower models in Kuwait. The brand hopes its combination of technology, design, and competitive pricing will appeal to foreign buyers.

Innovation and Sustainability

Hongqi is showcasing its innovation at auto shows, including concept flying cars and vehicles with biodegradable interiors made from seaweed and mushroom-based materials. The ultra-luxury Golden Sunflower limousine, priced at 10 million yuan ($1.4 million), takes inspiration from ancient Chinese calligraphy, highlighting the brand’s blend of tradition and modern luxury.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its strong growth in China, Hongqi faces hurdles abroad. Without the home-field advantage of being a national brand, it must convince international customers of its value. Competitors like Audi are also working to maintain their market share, including launching new China-only EVs to attract buyers.

Nonetheless, Hongqi’s rise demonstrates how Chinese automakers are rapidly developing advanced vehicles and appealing features while maintaining competitive prices. Its journey from a fading national brand to a global contender shows a powerful combination of design, technology, and national pride driving success.
