In a decisive step toward strengthening electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Hyderabad is set to add 50 new public EV charging units in key urban locations, further boosting the city’s efforts to become a model for sustainable urban transport in India.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) announced the expansion as part of its ongoing mission to support clean mobility and reduce vehicular emissions. This comes in response to the growing number of electric vehicles on city roads and the urgent need for reliable, accessible charging points to support them.
The new charging stations will be strategically installed across high-traffic zones, residential neighborhoods, public parking areas, and near key government offices. These include locations such as Necklace Road, NTR Gardens, Shilparamam, People’s Plaza, Tank Bund, and the Necklace Road MMTS station.
Officials confirmed that the HMDA has already completed feasibility studies and identified suitable locations to ensure optimal usage and convenience. With these additions, Hyderabad’s charging network will see a significant enhancement in both reach and density.
The project is being implemented under a public-private partnership model, with several private EV infrastructure providers on board. These companies will be responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the charging stations, while the government facilitates land use and regulatory support.
A key highlight of the initiative is the use of smart, app-connected charging units, allowing users to locate available chargers, check charging speeds, and make cashless payments — all in real time.
The move is expected to encourage more residents to make the switch from fossil fuel vehicles to electric alternatives. Hyderabad currently ranks among the top Indian cities for EV adoption, thanks to consistent state-level incentives, a growing range of EV models, and improving infrastructure.
“With EVs becoming more mainstream, charging convenience is crucial,” said an HMDA official. “These 50 new units are just the beginning — we are looking at a scalable, city-wide model.”
Telangana has been at the forefront of promoting green mobility. Its state EV policy includes subsidies for buyers, support for EV manufacturing, and a focus on building a robust charging ecosystem. Hyderabad’s charging infrastructure push aligns with this broader state vision and complements national goals for electric mobility.
Currently, the city has over 150 public charging points, and the addition of these 50 new units will help bridge demand gaps, particularly in underserved areas.
With 50 more charging stations on the way, Hyderabad is not just preparing for the electric future — it’s accelerating toward it. The city's proactive approach may well serve as a blueprint for other urban centers across India aiming to drive clean, connected, and sustainable mobility.
