Hyundai Motor to Launch In-House Driver-Assist System in 2029

Hyundai Motor Group plans to launch vehicles using its own driver-assistance software in late 2029, delaying the original target by about two years.

Until then, the South Korean automaker will work with Nvidia to bring more advanced driver-assistance technology to its vehicles. Hyundai expects to introduce Level 2+ and Level 2++ systems in 2028.

The strategy is designed to give Hyundai more time to develop and improve its own software platform, called Atria.

Hyundai and Nvidia Plan Joint Technology Development

Hyundai will co-design the driver-assistance technology with Nvidia instead of simply buying a finished system from the chipmaker.

Park Min-woo, a Hyundai Motor Group president, said the partnership would allow Hyundai to use driving data from the Nvidia-based system to train and improve Atria.

Nvidia will therefore play an important role in Hyundai's technology plans while the automaker continues developing its own long-term software capabilities.

Cameras and Radar to Support New Systems

Hyundai vehicles using Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform are expected to initially use cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar instead of expensive lidar technology.

The company is also considering lidar for Level 3 automated driving systems. Level 3 technology can allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel under specific conditions, although the system still operates within defined limits.

Hyundai says using multiple types of sensors is important for safety because another sensor can help maintain operation if one sensor fails.

Competition With Tesla and Chinese Automakers

Hyundai's software delay comes as Tesla and Chinese automakers continue to develop increasingly advanced driver-assistance features.

Analysts say the slower development of Hyundai's in-house system could leave the company more dependent on Nvidia in the short term.

Hyundai, however, sees the Nvidia partnership as a way to speed up deployment while building the data and technology needed for its own platform.

Hyundai and Kia Plan to Use Global Driving Data

Hyundai and Kia together have a large global vehicle fleet, giving the companies access to huge amounts of driving data.

Park said Hyundai plans to use this scale to collect data and train its automated-driving technology. The company expects to surpass competitors in accumulated driving data by 2033.

Data collection will be an important part of improving Atria and developing more capable automated-driving functions.
