The Indian government has directed shipowners, ship managers, and recruitment agencies not to deploy Indian seafarers on ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, as security conditions in the region continue to deteriorate.
The order was issued by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) following renewed military tensions in the Middle East and increasing attacks on commercial vessels operating near the strategic waterway.
The advisory comes after two Indian seafarers were killed in separate attacks on vessels in the region over the past three days. The incidents have raised serious concerns over the safety of Indian crew members serving on international merchant ships.
The Directorate General of Shipping said the worsening security environment has significantly increased the risks faced by commercial shipping and maritime personnel operating in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters.
In addition to halting new deployments, the government has instructed ship captains and operators to remain on high alert while navigating through the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and nearby maritime routes.
Shipping companies have been directed to continuously monitor navigational warnings, security advisories, and updates issued by relevant maritime authorities to ensure the safety of their crews.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime trade corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and gas exports. Escalating military activity in the region has increased risks for commercial shipping, prompting governments and shipping operators to review safety protocols.
India is the world's third-largest supplier of seafarers, with more than 300,000 Indian sailors employed on international merchant vessels.
The Indian government's directive is described as a precautionary measure aimed at protecting its maritime workforce until the security situation improves.
Authorities will continue monitoring developments in the Gulf region before deciding whether to lift the deployment restrictions.
