India Eases Visa Rules to Attract Chinese Professionals

Post by : Saif

India has simplified its business visa rules, making it easier for foreign engineers and technicians, particularly from China, to work in the country. This move aims to support Indian industries that rely on skilled Chinese professionals for manufacturing and technical services.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade said that a new digital platform, launched last month, allows companies to generate sponsorship letters for foreign professionals. Visa forms have been simplified, and approvals from additional ministries are no longer required, speeding up the process for qualified applicants.

The visa changes cover key areas such as factory installation, machinery commissioning, maintenance, and production. Many Indian businesses depend on Chinese experts for operating advanced machinery and training local staff, especially in sectors like electronics and solar energy.

India had imposed strict visa controls on Chinese nationals after a border clash in 2020. These restrictions affected Chinese companies such as Xiaomi and slowed the growth of factories using imported machinery. Analysts estimate that production losses due to delayed visas reached $15 billion over four years for Indian electronics manufacturers.

This recent reform follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China earlier this year, where he met President Xi Jinping to discuss ways to improve bilateral relations. While India continues to manage strategic concerns, easing visa restrictions shows a practical step toward better economic cooperation with China.

Industry leaders have welcomed the reforms, saying that faster visa approvals will help factories operate more efficiently, reduce skill shortages, and support expansion plans. The move also strengthens India’s position as a manufacturing hub in the face of global competition and supply chain challenges.

The simplified visa rules reflect a careful balance between economic needs and diplomatic strategy. By encouraging skilled foreign professionals, India aims to boost productivity, train local workers, and accelerate growth in technology-driven sectors.
