Kerala Approves Phase 1 Alignment of Thiruvananthapuram Metro

Post by : Meena Rani

The Kerala government has approved Phase 1 alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project, a major step toward transforming urban mobility in the state capital. The project will be executed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), which has also been involved in constructing major flyovers in the city, including Srikaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom.

The 31-kilometre phase 1 alignment will link major IT hubs, transport nodes, administrative offices, and healthcare centres, helping to streamline travel and reduce congestion in Thiruvananthapuram. Key locations connected include Technopark, the airport, Thampanoor bus stand, railway station, secretariat, and the medical college.

Phase 1 of the metro will feature 27 stations, starting from Pappanamcode and ending at Eanchakkal. The route includes important stops like Karyavattom, Technopark phases 1-3, and the airport. There will be three interchange stations at Kazhakoottam, Technopark Phase 1, and Karyavattom, facilitating seamless travel across different sections of the city.

The metro rail project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in Thiruvananthapuram, which currently struggles with heavy vehicular movement, particularly near administrative and commercial areas. By connecting major nodes efficiently, commuters will save time and enjoy safer travel.

KMRL’s experience with the Kochi Water Metro will support the success of this project. Kochi became India’s first city to launch a Water Metro, which improved connectivity along lakeshores, reduced traffic congestion, and lowered pollution. Thiruvananthapuram Metro aims to achieve similar benefits in the capital city.

The metro project is also expected to accelerate urban development in Thiruvananthapuram. By improving access to business hubs and residential areas, it will support economic growth, enhance quality of life, and make public transport a reliable choice for citizens.

Once completed, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro will join Kochi as a pioneer in modern urban transport in Kerala, strengthening the state’s position as a leader in innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. The project underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and citizen-friendly transport services.
