Kim Jong Un Oversees Hypersonic Missile Test as North Korea Signals Nuclear Strength

Post by : Saif

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the test firing of hypersonic missiles, marking the country’s first ballistic missile launch of the year. The test, reported by state media, was presented as a strong message about North Korea’s determination to maintain what it calls a reliable nuclear deterrent.

According to official reports, the missiles were launched on Sunday and struck targets about 1,000 kilometers away in the sea east of North Korea. Kim said the test was part of an important strategy to protect the country, pointing to what he described as growing global instability and rising international pressure.

While Kim did not name a specific crisis, analysts believe the launch may be linked to recent U.S. military action in Venezuela. North Korea has already criticized those strikes, calling them a violation of national sovereignty. Experts say Pyongyang often reacts strongly when it sees powerful countries using force, as it fears similar actions could be taken against it.

The timing of the missile test also drew attention. It took place as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung began a state visit to China, North Korea’s closest ally. South Korea’s military confirmed that multiple ballistic missiles were fired toward the eastern sea, increasing tension in the region during an important diplomatic moment.

Hypersonic missiles are especially worrying to many countries because they are harder to stop. These weapons travel at extremely high speeds and can change direction during flight. This makes them more difficult to track and intercept compared to traditional ballistic missiles. Analysts say the key danger lies not only in speed, but in their ability to maneuver at lower altitudes.

North Korea last tested hypersonic missiles in late 2025. Experts believe the latest weapons are the Hwasong-11 missiles, which were shown during a military parade last year. By repeating such tests, Pyongyang appears to be signaling that it can launch advanced weapons at short notice.

Missile development is a core part of North Korea’s long-term nuclear plan. In 2021, the country listed hypersonic weapons as one of its top military goals. Recent state media images have also shown what North Korea claims are efforts to build nuclear-powered submarines, adding to global concern.

Analysts say Kim is sending several messages at once. He is warning the United States and its allies not to challenge North Korea militarily. He is also signaling to South Korea and China, ahead of their talks, that denuclearization should not be on the table.

As global tensions rise, North Korea’s missile tests highlight the fragile security situation in East Asia. While Pyongyang insists its actions are defensive, its growing arsenal continues to alarm neighbors and the wider international community.
