Lufthansa City Airlines is preparing for a major step in its expansion by beginning scheduled flights from Frankfurt Airport in the first quarter of 2026. This marks a strategic shift from its current operations centered exclusively at Munich Airport, where the airline launched flights in the summer of 2024.

The move, first reported by AeroRoutes, highlights Lufthansa Group’s broader goal of strengthening its regional European network from both of Germany’s primary international hubs. Frankfurt, being one of the busiest airports in Europe, offers Lufthansa City Airlines direct access to more connecting passengers and international travelers.

First Frankfurt Routes Announced

The airline has detailed several new connections from Frankfurt, spread across February and March 2026:

  • Frankfurt – Berlin: Two daily flights starting February 10, 2026.

  • Frankfurt – Manchester: Six weekly flights beginning February 9, 2026.

  • Frankfurt – Valencia: One weekly flight starting February 19, 2026.

  • Frankfurt – Düsseldorf: Seven weekly flights launching March 1, 2026.

  • Frankfurt – Málaga: Seven weekly flights also from March 1, 2026.

All services will be operated by Airbus A320neo aircraft, which form the backbone of the airline’s growing fleet.

Fleet Development: A Mix of A319, A320neo and A220 Orders

As of September 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines operates a fleet of 12 aircraft:

  • 4 Airbus A319s

  • 8 Airbus A320neos

The A320neos are central to the expansion strategy, offering efficiency, lower emissions, and enhanced passenger comfort. On April 8, 2025, the airline received its first new A320neo, registered D-AIJP and named ‘Ingelheim am Rhein’, during a handover ceremony at Airbus’s Hamburg facility. This aircraft features the Airspace cabin, with 180 seats, larger overhead bins, and modern lighting to enhance the passenger experience.

Looking ahead, the carrier is set for a major fleet renewal and expansion. Lufthansa City Airlines has 40 Airbus A220-300s on order, with deliveries beginning in 2026. The A220, a smaller and highly fuel-efficient aircraft, will allow the airline to operate thinner routes while maintaining profitability and connectivity across Europe.

Strategic Role within Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa City Airlines was created to reinforce Lufthansa Group’s presence in the European feeder market. Its role is to operate short- and medium-haul routes that connect passengers from across Europe to Lufthansa’s long-haul network in Munich and Frankfurt.

The decision to expand into Frankfurt reflects Lufthansa Group’s commitment to balancing operations between its two key hubs. While Munich remains a vital base, Frankfurt offers greater international connectivity and serves as the home base for many of Lufthansa’s intercontinental flights. By adding point-to-point connections to European cities such as Berlin, Manchester, and Málaga, Lufthansa City Airlines can funnel more passengers into Lufthansa’s global network.

Competitive Landscape in European Aviation

The European aviation market has been evolving rapidly, with competition intensifying among low-cost carriers (such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air) and traditional network airlines. Lufthansa City Airlines represents the group’s answer to maintaining competitiveness on short-haul European routes while ensuring quality, reliability, and integration with the Lufthansa brand.

The use of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft like the A320neo and upcoming A220-300s supports Lufthansa Group’s sustainability goals. Lower operating costs also make it easier to compete against low-cost rivals on price-sensitive routes.

The Arrival of the A220

One of the most anticipated developments for Lufthansa City Airlines is the arrival of the Airbus A220-300. The aircraft is known for its range flexibility, cost efficiency, and passenger-friendly design. Its delivery, scheduled to begin in 2026, will give the airline greater flexibility in matching aircraft size to route demand.

The A220s will also open opportunities for the airline to serve smaller cities across Europe, further strengthening Lufthansa Group’s feeder network. With a confirmed order of 40 A220-300s, Lufthansa City Airlines is positioned for sustained growth in the second half of the decade.

 Lufthansa City Airlines’ Formation

Lufthansa City Airlines officially commenced operations in June 2024 with flights from Munich. The airline was created as part of Lufthansa Group’s post-pandemic strategy to secure its presence in the European short-haul market. It operates under its own brand but fully integrates into Lufthansa’s booking system, ensuring seamless connectivity for travelers.

The airline’s growth trajectory—expanding from a single hub to Germany’s two largest airports within two years—demonstrates Lufthansa Group’s confidence in the carrier’s role within the network.

The expansion of Lufthansa City Airlines to Frankfurt in 2026 marks a major milestone in the airline’s short but ambitious history. With new routes to Berlin, Düsseldorf, Málaga, Manchester, and Valencia, and a modern fleet led by the A320neo and upcoming A220-300, the airline is positioning itself as a crucial player in Lufthansa Group’s European strategy.
