Moldova has strongly protested to Russia after another drone entered its airspace, marking the latest incident in a growing list of complaints. On Wednesday, Moldova summoned Russia’s ambassador, Oleg Ozerov, to express its anger and to demand that Moscow prevent such events from happening again.
The Moldovan government said six Russian drones were detected on Tuesday. One drone landed on the roof of a home outside the town of Floresti, close to the Ukrainian border. Another drone flew across Moldovan airspace and then moved toward Romania. Officials described the situation as “absolutely unacceptable” and a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty.
Moldova’s Foreign Ministry called the drone incident a “serious threat to national and regional security.” To make their point clear, officials placed the 18-kilogram drone in front of the ministry building as Ambassador Ozerov arrived for the meeting. The drone was displayed to show evidence of the intrusion.
But Ambassador Ozerov questioned the entire event. Speaking to reporters, he asked whether anyone truly believed that a drone could “run out of fuel and land on a roof without causing damage.” He suggested the incident might be a “false flag operation” designed to further damage relations between Moldova and Russia. These relations, he said, were already at their “lowest point in history.”
The Moldovan government, which supports closer ties with Europe, has repeatedly criticised Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and accuses Moscow of trying to destabilise the region. This latest drone incident comes just one week after Moldova issued a similar complaint about Russian drone activity.
Tensions are also rising in neighbouring Romania. On Tuesday, Romanian and German NATO fighter jets were scrambled near the border with Ukraine after another drone flew deeper than ever into Romanian skies. Both NATO members and Moldova fear that the war in Ukraine is increasingly spilling into their territories.
Both Moldova and Russia have expelled diplomats over the past year, as relations continue to deteriorate. Despite being in the country for more than a year, Ambassador Ozerov has still not been formally invited to present his credentials to Moldovan President Maia Sandu—another sign of worsening ties.
As drone incidents increase, Moldova is urging Russia to act responsibly and prevent further violations. But with Moscow denying responsibility and relations already strained, the dispute shows no sign of easing soon.
