Myanmar to Conduct Third Phase of Elections Amid Ongoing Conflict

Post by : Saif

Myanmar is preparing to hold the third phase of its general election on January 25, 2026, according to the state-run media. This comes after the first two phases of voting, scheduled for December 28, 2025, and January 11, 2026, which covered 202 townships out of 330 across the country. The third phase will take place in 63 townships, according to the announcement by the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper.

The election plan is happening amid a serious civil conflict that continues across the country. Since the military seized power in a coup in 2021, armed resistance has grown stronger in several regions. Analysts say that holding elections in this environment is extremely challenging and may not fully represent the will of all citizens.

The military, led by Junta Chief Min Aung Hlaing, has said that the election is meant to create a stable administration. However, it has also admitted that the election will not be nationwide, and many areas remain under the control of armed resistance groups.

No official dates have been announced for the counting of votes or the announcement of the election results. Despite the uncertainty, the military insists that the election has popular support among the people.

Experts believe the military is attempting to move from military control to political legitimacy. The challenge remains significant, as voters in conflict areas may not be able to safely participate. The election’s credibility may also be questioned by international observers because of the ongoing instability.

This third phase of voting is seen as a key test for Myanmar’s military government. It reflects the junta's goal to shift from armed conflict to governance through elections, but the situation on the ground makes the process highly complicated.

In the coming weeks, citizens and international watchers will closely observe whether the elections can proceed safely and fairly, or if the conflict will continue to overshadow the voting process.

Myanmar's path toward democracy and stability remains uncertain, and the upcoming election phase will be an important indicator of the country’s political future.
