New Air Force One Faces Another Delay as Boeing Misses Delivery Timeline

Post by : Saif

The delivery of the United States president’s new Air Force One aircraft has been delayed once again, adding to growing concerns over the long-running Boeing project. According to the U.S. Air Force, the first of two new presidential jets will now arrive in mid-2028, one year later than previously expected.

This latest delay puts pressure on Boeing and risks disappointing President Donald Trump, who has said he wants to fly on the new aircraft before his term ends in January 2029. With the project already running far behind schedule, time is becoming increasingly tight.

The Air Force One program involves converting two Boeing 747-8 airplanes into highly secure and advanced aircraft designed to serve as flying command centers for the U.S. president. These jets are expected to include top-level communication systems, defensive capabilities, and special features needed for presidential travel during emergencies.

The current Air Force One planes have been in service since 1990. While they have been regularly upgraded, officials have long said that new aircraft are needed to replace the aging fleet and meet modern security demands.

Boeing first received the contract to build the new Air Force One jets in 2018, with an initial value of $3.9 billion. Since then, costs have increased to more than $5 billion. Boeing has already recorded $2.4 billion in losses related to the project, highlighting the financial strain caused by delays, supply chain problems, and rising expenses.

Despite the setback, Boeing said it continues to make progress and remains focused on delivering two high-quality aircraft for the country. The company has acknowledged the complexity of the project, which requires meeting strict government security and safety standards.

In the meantime, the U.S. government has taken steps to ensure the president has a modern aircraft available if the new jets are not ready in time. In May, the United States accepted a luxury Boeing 747 jet as a gift from Qatar. The White House asked the Air Force to quickly upgrade the aircraft so it can be used as a temporary Air Force One.

The Air Force has assigned defense contractor L3Harris Technologies to handle the upgrades on the Qatar jet. The work includes adding secure communication systems and other equipment required for presidential use.

President Trump has openly criticized Boeing over the repeated delays but has ruled out buying aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus. Boeing’s leadership has said that Elon Musk, who serves as an adviser to Trump, has been helping the company work through delivery challenges.

To improve management of the program, Boeing hired Steve Sullivan in June to lead the Air Force One project. Sullivan is a former Northrop Grumman executive with experience working on major defense programs, including the B-21 bomber. He replaced Gregg Coffey, who moved to another position within Boeing.

The repeated delays raise broader questions about large government defense projects and the challenges of managing cost, time, and technical complexity. As the 2028 delivery date approaches, pressure will continue to mount on Boeing to deliver the new Air Force One jets without further setbacks.

For now, the United States will continue relying on its existing aircraft and temporary solutions while waiting for the long-promised replacement that is meant to serve as a symbol of American leadership and security.
