Passenger Duct-Taped on American Airlines Flight After Attack

Post by : Meena Rani

American Airlines flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Las Vegas faced a major in-flight disturbance when passenger Ketty J. Dilone, 31, allegedly attacked a flight attendant and threatened crew members. The incident occurred after her return from the Dominican Republic.

Reports indicate that Dilone became disruptive mid-flight, shouting at crew members and moving throughout the cabin. The situation escalated when she allegedly kicked a flight attendant, causing injury and prompting immediate intervention by airline staff.

Flight Crew Restrains Passenger

Flight attendants responded quickly to contain the situation. Due to the severity of Dilone’s behavior, she was restrained using zip ties and duct tape—a method rarely used but authorized under federal aviation safety regulations for extreme cases.

A video circulating online shows Dilone shouting profanities at the crew, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident and drawing widespread attention to airline safety procedures.

Shocking Confession During Flight

During the disturbance, Dilone reportedly made a startling confession, claiming she once attempted to poison her father as a child using roach poison, which she said was unsuccessful. She referred to the substance by its Dominican Republic nickname, “Tres Pasito.”

Authorities noted that while this pesticide is banned in the United States, it remains in use in the Dominican Republic for rodent and insect control. This revelation added a disturbing dimension to the in-flight incident.

Arrest and Charges

Upon landing at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Dilone was arrested by the FBI and booked into the Henderson Detention Center.

She faces federal charges, including:

  • Interference with a flight crew – obstructing airline staff while performing their duties.

  • Assault on a flight crew member – for allegedly kicking a flight attendant.

Officials have not disclosed her mental or physical state, but the arrest underscores the seriousness of such events under U.S. federal law.

Airline Safety and Protocols

This incident highlights the challenges airlines face in ensuring passenger and crew safety. Extreme in-flight disturbances are rare, but airlines maintain strict protocols, including restraint procedures, crew training, and coordination with law enforcement, to address potential threats.

American Airlines has not announced any specific policy changes following the event, though viral media coverage may influence future guidelines.

Broader Implications

Experts note that incidents like this underscore the importance of mental health considerations and the enforcement of aviation regulations. The use of zip ties or duct tape, though uncommon, is an approved last-resort measure when a passenger poses an immediate danger to themselves or others.

The arrest of Ketty J. Dilone after her mid-flight outburst serves as a reminder of the unpredictable challenges faced in air travel. Federal authorities continue to investigate the case, while airlines and regulators assess measures to maintain safety for passengers and crew.
