Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte is once again facing impeachment complaints, adding new pressure to an already tense political climate in the country. The complaints were filed on Monday by civil society groups and activists who accuse her of serious wrongdoing, including corruption and abuse of public trust.
Sara Duterte is the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte and is widely seen as a strong candidate for the 2028 presidential election. She survived a similar impeachment attempt last year after the Supreme Court ruled that the process violated constitutional rules. This time, however, the challenge comes under stricter legal guidelines set by the court.
The new complaints accuse Duterte of misusing public funds, bribery linked to government contracts, and refusing to cooperate with investigations by Congress. One complaint also refers to alleged threats made against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the first lady, and a former House speaker. Duterte has denied these accusations in the past.
Her lawyer, Michael Poa, said the new impeachment attempts were expected and that Duterte is ready to defend herself through legal and constitutional channels. He stressed that she would face the allegations directly and follow due process.
The move highlights the deep political divide between Duterte and President Marcos Jr., who were once allies but are now rivals. Marcos is limited to a single term and cannot run again, but he is expected to support a successor in 2028. Many analysts believe the impeachment effort is closely tied to the struggle for future political power.
Two separate impeachment complaints were submitted, both repeating claims similar to those raised last year. The groups behind them argue that public officials must be held accountable and that ignoring investigations weakens democracy.
President Marcos’ office declined to comment directly on the complaints, saying the issue should be decided by Congress. The administration said it respects the rule of law and supports efforts to fight corruption.
Unlike last year, the impeachment case now faces tougher legal hurdles. The Supreme Court has added new procedural safeguards, making it harder for such cases to move forward. In addition, more Duterte allies now sit in the Senate, which acts as the jury in impeachment trials.
Senator Risa Hontiveros noted that the impeachment effort would be more difficult this time because of these legal and political changes. She said the process would be challenging but stressed that accountability remains important.
As the Philippines moves closer to the next national election, the renewed impeachment push against Vice President Duterte is expected to further intensify political tensions. The outcome could play a major role in shaping the country’s political future.
