Poland has raised fresh security concerns after its military intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft near Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea and detected multiple objects entering from neighboring Belarus. The incidents, which happened during the holiday season, have added to growing tension along NATO’s eastern border and triggered warnings from Polish authorities about possible provocations.
According to the Polish army, fighter jets were scrambled on Thursday morning after a Russian surveillance plane was spotted flying close to Poland’s airspace over international waters in the Baltic Sea. Polish pilots intercepted the aircraft, visually identified it, and escorted it away from the area under Poland’s responsibility. While the Russian plane did not enter Polish airspace, officials said its close approach required a firm and immediate response.
At the same time, Poland reported a separate and troubling development along its eastern border. The National Security Bureau said several dozen objects crossed into Polish airspace from the direction of Belarus overnight. So far, four of these objects have been found and identified as likely smuggling balloons, commonly used to transport illegal goods such as cigarettes.
Polish security officials said the large number of airspace violations, their timing during a major holiday period, and the presence of a Russian military aircraft nearby raise serious concerns. They warned that these actions may not be random. Instead, they could represent a deliberate provocation designed to test Poland’s defenses while appearing to be simple smuggling activity.
Countries along NATO’s eastern flank have been on high alert in recent months. Tensions increased in September when Russian military aircraft violated Estonia’s airspace, and when multiple Russian drones crossed into Polish territory. These incidents have made regional governments more cautious and quicker to respond to any unusual activity in the sky.
Similar problems have also affected Lithuania. Smuggling balloons launched from Belarus have repeatedly disrupted air traffic there, at times forcing the temporary closure of Vilnius airport. Lithuanian authorities say these balloon flights are part of a “hybrid attack,” combining illegal activity with political pressure. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, has denied responsibility for the balloons.
In Poland, the military took additional steps to protect civilians. Part of the airspace over the Podlaskie region in northeastern Poland, which borders Belarus, was temporarily closed to civilian aircraft. Authorities said the move was necessary to ensure safety while security forces monitored the situation.
Neither the Russian nor Belarusian embassies in Warsaw immediately responded to requests for comment on the incidents.
As tensions continue to rise in Eastern Europe, Poland’s response shows how seriously it is taking potential threats to its airspace. While some of the objects detected may turn out to be linked to smuggling, the wider pattern of military activity near NATO borders has left little room for complacency. For Poland and its allies, vigilance remains the key message during a time of growing uncertainty.
