Polish F-16 Pilot Dies in Crash During Airshow Practice in Radom

A tragic accident struck Poland’s military aviation community when a Polish Army F-16 fighter jet crashed while preparing for the AirSHOW Radom 2025. The pilot, a member of the elite “Tiger Demo” NATO unit, died on impact.

Incident Details

The crash occurred near Radom airport at around 19:30 local time (17:30 GMT). The jet, assigned to the 31st Tactical Air Base near Poznan, failed to recover after takeoff and barreled into the ground. Firefighters responded immediately, but the pilot could not be saved.

Videos on social media showed the fighter jet nose-diving and exploding into flames during a practice run. Local reports noted that the pilot did not eject before the crash.

Reaction from Officials

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz visited the crash site and paid tribute to the pilot, calling him “dedicated and courageous.”

AirSHOW Radom 2025, scheduled for this weekend, has been canceled in response to the tragedy.

NATO allies also expressed condolences. Italy’s Defence General Staff called the incident “profoundly sorrowful,” while Latvia’s Minister of Defence expressed being “deeply saddened.”

Poland’s F-16 Fleet and Upgrades

Poland first purchased U.S.-made F-16s in 2003. These jets play a key role in NATO defense and national security. Following Russia’s 2023 invasion of Ukraine, Poland increased defense spending and began upgrading its F-16 fleet to enhance readiness and capabilities.

Investigation and Safety Measures

Polish authorities launched a full investigation into the crash to determine the cause, examining mechanical performance, pilot actions, and procedural adherence. Lessons from such incidents are vital for improving aviation safety.

The Role of Fighter Pilots

Fighter pilots face high-risk conditions during routine training and public demonstrations. The “Tiger Demo” team, to which the pilot belonged, is known for precision flying and complex aerial maneuvers. Accidents, although rare, highlight the dangers inherent in military aviation.

International Impact

The pilot’s death is a significant loss to NATO allies and the global aviation community. Messages of solidarity have been sent from countries participating in joint defense efforts with Poland.
