Honduras is facing growing political turmoil as protests in the capital, Tegucigalpa, have delayed a special recount of ballots from the November 30 presidential election. The recount, meant to review around 15% of the total votes, could potentially change the outcome between the two leading candidates.
The head of the National Electoral Council, Ana Paola Hall, said on Monday that hundreds of supporters of the ruling leftist LIBRE party blocked access to the building where the ballots are stored. As a result, election workers could not start the hand recount.
The special recount is critical because it focuses on tally sheets that have reported “inconsistencies.” Hall noted on X (formerly Twitter) that the protest prevented the necessary conditions for the recount to begin.
Political tensions in Honduras have escalated since the election. Former President Mel Zelaya, the husband of current President Xiomara Castro, urged LIBRE party supporters to continue protests and demanded that every ballot be recounted by hand.
Preliminary election results show conservative National Party candidate Nasry Asfura leading with 40.54% of the vote. He is followed closely by center-right Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla, who has 39.19%. The ruling LIBRE party’s Rixi Moncada is far behind with 19.29%.
The ballots under review in the special recount could potentially shift the lead between Asfura and Nasralla. While election day itself was calm, the process of counting and reporting the votes has been chaotic, with technical failures and political disputes causing confusion.
International interference has also complicated matters. Former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly supported Asfura, warned of withholding funds if another candidate won, and alleged election fraud without providing evidence.
The delays and protests leave Honduras in a state of political uncertainty, with citizens awaiting a clear and credible resolution. Many fear that continued unrest could undermine public trust in the country’s democratic process.
As the situation develops, it is crucial for the authorities to ensure a transparent and safe recount, allowing Hondurans to know the true outcome of their presidential election. The country remains at a critical moment where calm and order are needed to prevent further instability.
