June 25, 2025 | New Delhi/Pune — In a landmark decision that reinforces India’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility, the Union Cabinet has officially approved Phase 3 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, ushering in a new era of seamless, eco-friendly connectivity for one of the country’s fastest-growing urban centers. The much-anticipated expansion aims to ease traffic congestion, cut emissions, and dramatically improve public transport accessibility for millions of Pune’s residents, tech professionals, and students.
The newly sanctioned phase will span an ambitious 45.46 kilometers, covering 35 new metro stations across densely populated and economically vital corridors. Once completed, it will transform how the city moves — connecting IT parks, industrial hubs, educational institutions, and residential areas with fast, affordable, and climate-resilient metro services. With Pune’s population projected to cross 10 million in the coming years, this development could not have come at a better time.
The ₹15,869 crore project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), a joint venture between the Central and Maharashtra state governments. Funding will come from a combination of central and state allocations, as well as institutional financing, signaling strong public-private confidence in Pune’s future as a smart city.
Phase 3 of the Pune Metro isn’t just about adding lines; it’s about knitting together the city’s economic, educational, and social fabric. The approved extensions will include:
Officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs stated that the project, once operational, is expected to cater to over 1.2 million daily commuters. The expanded network is set to radically transform how citizens navigate the city—especially in high-density areas like Hinjawadi, Magarpatta, Baner, and Hadapsar, where rapid urbanization has outpaced infrastructure.
This expansion is about more than just rail lines—it's a cornerstone in India’s broader urban transformation agenda. Pune Metro Phase 3 will feature state-of-the-art systems such as:
These innovations are designed not only to reduce travel time but also to minimize the city’s carbon footprint. The metro network will help curb Pune’s increasing reliance on private vehicles, significantly reducing vehicular congestion, fuel consumption, and urban air pollution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the decision, calling it a “decisive step toward green urban mobility” and praised Pune as a model for India’s emerging smart cities. “This metro expansion will empower the city’s working professionals and students, improve air quality, and support our broader climate goals,” he said in a statement.
The Pune Metro expansion is aligned with India’s National Urban Transport Policy and Smart Cities Mission, both of which promote mass transit and transit-oriented development (TOD) as sustainable urban planning tools. Once operational, the Phase 3 corridors are expected to trigger further economic growth, real estate development, and job creation in Pune’s expanding metropolitan zones.
Construction work on the newly approved phase is slated to begin by the end of 2025, with a tentative completion timeline of five to six years, depending on land acquisition, environmental clearances, and technical execution. Authorities are also expected to launch public awareness campaigns and digital engagement tools to inform residents about construction timelines, diversions, and safety protocols.
Urban planners, environmentalists, and civic leaders have largely welcomed the move, calling it “visionary” and “urgently needed.” With the Pune Metro Phase 1 already partially operational and Phase 2 progressing steadily, Phase 3 brings the city one step closer to becoming a model of integrated, sustainable, and inclusive public transport in India.
As Pune continues its transformation into a knowledge and innovation hub, this metro expansion could be the steel spine that supports its journey into the future.
