Russia Says Ukraine Fired U.S. ATACMS Missiles at Voronezh

Post by : Saif

Russia has said that Ukraine targeted the southern Russian city of Voronezh with U.S.-made ATACMS missiles in what Moscow described as an attack on civilian areas. The Russian defence ministry shared the information on Wednesday, stating that four missiles were launched toward the city. The event marks another serious point in the ongoing conflict between the two countries, which has continued for almost three years.

According to the Russian statement, the missiles were shot down by the country’s air defence systems. The ministry reported that both the S-400 system and the Pantsir missile-and-gun systems worked together to intercept all four missiles before they could reach their targets. Although no civilians were killed or injured, falling debris damaged the roofs of an orphanage, a retirement home, and one private house in the city. Russia also published photos showing fragments of the destroyed missiles to support its claim. Military officials said that air reconnaissance identified the launch area as Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, which lies close to the Russian border.

Ukraine had confirmed earlier that it used U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles to strike Russian targets. Ukrainian authorities called this a “significant development,” highlighting that long-range missiles give them the ability to strike military sites deeper inside Russia. Ukraine received ATACMS missile systems in 2023, but at first, Kyiv was only allowed to use them within Ukrainian territory. Much of this territory remains under Russian control since the invasion began in 2022, with nearly one-fifth of Ukraine’s land held by Russian forces. Over time, the rules on missile use have changed, allowing Ukraine to expand its targeting range.

Russia also said that it responded to the attack by firing Iskander-M missiles to destroy two Ukrainian multiple rocket launchers. The exchange shows how both sides continue to rely on long-range weapons in the current phase of the war. Russia also noted that this was not the first time ATACMS have been used against its territory. In January, Ukraine reportedly launched six missiles at the Belgorod region, also using the U.S.-supplied system. Last year, Kyiv combined ATACMS strikes with British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles, which led Russian President Vladimir Putin to order a hypersonic missile attack on Ukraine as a retaliation.

The latest incident in Voronezh adds to the growing military pressure on both sides. Ukraine has been seeking stronger weapons to push Russian forces back, while Russia has been warning that attacks on its territory could lead to stronger responses. Both countries are continuing to increase their military actions as the conflict shows no sign of ending soon.

International observers are watching closely, as the use of longer-range Western-made weapons brings new risks. Analysts believe that the more Ukraine is able to strike inside Russia, the more serious the military and diplomatic consequences could become. For civilians in both countries, the conflict has already brought loss, fear, and uncertainty, and events like the Voronezh strike show that the situation remains tense and unpredictable.
