Russian Air Strike on Kyiv Kills First Civilians of 2026

Post by : Saif

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, suffered its first reported civilian deaths of 2026 after a Russian air attack overnight, authorities said on Monday. The strike set a medical facility on fire in the Obolonskyi district of northern Kyiv, where an inpatient ward was operating. Emergency responders found one person dead inside after extinguishing the blaze. Another woman was injured, and 25 people were evacuated safely, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

Photos shared by the emergency service showed responders carrying a body on a stretcher outside the building, with snow covering the ground, highlighting the harsh conditions during the rescue efforts.

The attacks were not limited to Kyiv alone. Russia also struck towns and villages across the Kyiv region, damaging homes and key infrastructure. A civilian was reported dead in the Fastiv district, southwest of the capital, and some areas were left without power, regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk said via Telegram.

Russia has not commented on the latest attacks. Both Russia and Ukraine claim they do not target civilians, yet repeated strikes on cities and towns during the nearly four-year conflict have caused heavy civilian suffering. Ukraine says Russian missile and drone attacks often hit hospitals, homes, and other civilian infrastructure, while Russia insists it strikes military targets.

This latest violence underscores the continuing human cost of the war. Even as 2026 begins, civilians remain vulnerable, and emergency services continue to face immense challenges in responding to attacks amid winter conditions.

As the conflict continues, international observers and humanitarian groups are closely monitoring the situation, calling for the protection of civilians and immediate aid for those affected. The attack in Kyiv serves as a stark reminder that the war’s toll on ordinary people remains high.
