U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is thinking about allowing the sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. These jets, made by Lockheed Martin, are some of the most powerful and modern aircraft in the world. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said that Saudi Arabia wants to buy “a lot of jets,” and he is looking closely at their request.
This possible deal comes at an important time. Next week, Trump will host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. During the visit, the two leaders are expected to sign several agreements related to security and the economy. Trump said the event would be “more than a meeting.” He said the U.S. is “honoring” Saudi Arabia, showing that the relationship between the two countries remains strong.
Trump also repeated his hope that Saudi Arabia will join the Abraham Accords. These agreements have helped normalise ties between Israel and several Muslim-majority nations. However, Saudi Arabia has said it cannot move forward without clear progress on creating a future Palestinian state. This remains one of the biggest political challenges in the Middle East.
While the F-35 sale could strengthen U.S.–Saudi ties, there are also concerns. A Pentagon intelligence report, according to the New York Times, has warned that the deal could risk sensitive technology falling into China’s hands. Some U.S. officials fear that if Saudi Arabia buys the jets, China may find ways to study or copy the advanced technology. This issue is serious because the F-35 is designed to stay hidden from enemy radar and is one of the most advanced aircraft ever built.
Supporters of the sale argue that giving F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia could help improve security in the Middle East, especially as the region faces rising tensions. They say stronger U.S. partnerships could help maintain stability. However, critics believe that selling such advanced weapons could increase military risks and create new complications in an already fragile region.
As Trump reviews the request, both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia will consider political, military, and diplomatic factors. The final decision could shape the future of defense ties between the two countries and could also affect power dynamics in the Middle East for years to come.
