Trump Switches From Old Air Force One to New Qatari Jet During UK Stop After Turkey Visit

Post by : Saif

US President Donald Trump made an unexpected aircraft switch during his return from Turkey after attending the NATO Summit, flying aboard the older Air Force One from Ankara before boarding the newly refurbished Qatari-donated presidential aircraft in the United Kingdom for the final leg of his journey to Washington.

The move attracted fresh attention as the new Boeing 747, donated by Qatar and recently upgraded for presidential use, made its first international trip amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Old Air Force One Used for Flight From Turkey

Trump departed Ankara aboard the traditional light blue Air Force One instead of the newly refurbished aircraft that had flown him to Turkey. The President later boarded the new jet at RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom before continuing his journey to the United States.

Speaking on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he chose to fly the older aircraft from Turkey "for old time's sake." He added that the new Air Force One stopped in Britain so US military personnel stationed there could tour the aircraft.

Photographs and videos later showed Trump boarding the new presidential jet before departing for Washington.

New Presidential Jet Draws Attention

The new Air Force One is a Boeing 747 donated by the Qatari government and modified by defense contractor L3Harris Technologies. The aircraft features a new red, white, dark blue, and gold exterior selected by Trump.

The aircraft has been introduced as an interim presidential transport while Boeing continues work on two next-generation Air Force One aircraft ordered under a long-running modernization program.

Security Questions Continue

The aircraft switch has renewed debate in Washington over the Qatari-donated plane. Critics have questioned the speed of the aircraft's refurbishment, arguing that accelerated modifications may have limited some planned security enhancements.

Experts have said presidential aircraft require highly sophisticated communication systems, electronic protection against surveillance, and advanced missile defense capabilities. US officials, however, maintain that the aircraft meets all required standards for presidential travel.

During a press conference in Ankara, Trump was asked whether security concerns or assassination threats influenced his decision to change aircraft. Without directly confirming the reason, he acknowledged ongoing threats, saying he remained a target for Iran but was not concerned.

Boeing Delays Continue

The temporary use of the Qatari aircraft comes as Boeing continues facing delays in delivering the next generation of Air Force One aircraft.

The company is building two specially designed Boeing 747-8 aircraft under a contract signed in 2018. The project is now running several years behind schedule, with deliveries expected no earlier than mid-2028.

The delays have increased pressure on the US government to maintain an interim presidential aircraft while the replacement program remains under development. Boeing has also reported billions of dollars in additional costs related to the project.

Presidential Travel Remains Under Close Watch

Every presidential overseas trip includes backup aircraft and extensive security planning to ensure continuity of operations. Aviation experts say changing aircraft during international travel is unusual but remains part of standard contingency planning when required.

Trump's decision to alternate between two presidential aircraft during his return from Turkey has once again placed the Air Force One modernization program and presidential aviation security under public scrutiny.
