A Turkish Airlines passenger plane caught fire shortly after landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Monday. The incident created panic at the airport, but all passengers and crew members were evacuated safely without injuries.
According to airport officials, the aircraft had arrived from Istanbul and was carrying 277 passengers along with 11 crew members. Soon after the plane landed, smoke and flames were seen near the rear landing gear area of the aircraft. Emergency teams immediately rushed to the runway and firefighters quickly began efforts to control the fire.
Passengers were evacuated using emergency exits while airport rescue teams worked around the aircraft. Witnesses at the airport said smoke could be seen rising from one side of the plane as emergency vehicles surrounded the aircraft within minutes. Due to the quick response of the crew and airport staff, the fire was brought under control before it could spread further.
Authorities temporarily closed airport operations for a short period to handle the emergency safely. Flights were delayed during the rescue operation, but airport services later returned to normal. The aircraft was moved away from the runway for technical inspection and investigation.
Turkish Airlines said initial findings pointed toward a technical issue near the hydraulic system close to the landing gear. Engineers and aviation experts are now examining the aircraft to determine the exact cause of the fire. Nepal’s civil aviation authorities have also launched an investigation into the incident.
The event once again highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness in aviation. Quick action by firefighters, cabin crew, and airport rescue teams helped prevent a major disaster. Aviation experts often say that proper training and fast response are critical during emergencies, especially when fire is involved.
Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport is Nepal’s busiest airport and handles both domestic and international flights daily. Nepal’s aviation sector has faced safety concerns in the past because of difficult weather conditions and mountainous terrain, making strict safety checks even more important.
Air travel remains one of the safest forms of transportation in the world, but incidents like this remind airlines and airports that regular maintenance and safety inspections are necessary at all times. Even a small technical fault can create serious danger if not handled quickly.
Passengers onboard the Turkish Airlines flight were reportedly shaken by the experience but thankful that the evacuation happened safely. Many travelers praised the calm behavior of the cabin crew and the fast response from emergency services.
The airline is expected to arrange alternative travel plans for affected passengers while the damaged aircraft remains under inspection. Officials said a detailed report will be prepared after investigators complete their examination of the plane.
The incident ended without casualties, but it serves as an important reminder that aviation safety must always remain a top priority for airlines, airports, and aviation authorities around the world.
