Ukraine has sent its peace negotiators to the United States for important talks with senior officials from President Donald Trump’s administration. The visit is aimed at discussing details of a proposed agreement that could help end the four-year war between Ukraine and Russia.
The Ukrainian delegation is expected to meet White House envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian president’s office, said the goal of the visit is clear. Ukraine wants a fair and lasting peace, and the team is working to achieve real progress.
President Trump has been pressing both Kyiv and Moscow to reach a deal. However, despite many talks in recent months, the fighting has not stopped. Heavy clashes continue along a long front line stretching more than 1,200 kilometres across Ukraine.
Ukraine and the United States have already prepared a 20-point peace proposal. Russia has not yet responded to it. Some of the hardest issues remain unresolved, including whether Ukraine would have to give up territory, what kind of security guarantees it would receive, and what will happen to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian control.
Ukrainian officials said the talks in the US will also focus on long-term security and rebuilding the country after the war. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said he hopes to sign agreements related to a major recovery plan with the United States during the World Economic Forum in Davos next week. This plan could unlock up to $800 billion in investments to help rebuild Ukraine’s damaged cities, roads, and industries.
The visit shows that Ukraine is continuing to push for international support while trying to end the war through diplomacy. While a final peace deal still seems difficult, these talks are seen as an important step toward reducing violence and planning for Ukraine’s future. The outcome of the meetings could have a major impact not only on Ukraine but also on global stability.
