Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrived in France on Monday for important talks with French President Emmanuel Macron. The visit comes at a time when Russia has increased its drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, and fighting has become heavier in the Zaporizhzhia region. Zelenskiy hopes to secure long-term military support that will help his country defend itself and strengthen its air force.
Zelenskiy said on social media that a “historic agreement” with France is ready and will bring major improvements to Ukraine’s air defence and combat aviation. He said the deal will be signed during his visit. For weeks, Ukraine and France have been discussing how Paris can provide more help, even though France is facing political and budget problems at home.
France has already promised to send more Mirage fighter jets and a new set of Aster 30 missiles, which are used in the SAMP/T air defence systems that Ukraine operates. But according to people familiar with the talks, this visit will bring even bigger commitments. One of the main ideas is a 10-year aviation agreement that would help Ukraine build a larger and stronger air force. This could include Dassault-made Rafale fighter jets, which are advanced, multi-role aircraft used by the French military.
Some Rafale jets might come directly from France’s own supply, but most would be part of Ukraine’s long-term goal to have a fleet of around 250 warplanes. Ukraine plans to use a mix of Rafales, U.S. F-16s, and Sweden’s Gripen jets. However, training pilots to use Rafale jets will take time because the aircraft requires strict and detailed training.
France and Ukraine are also expected to sign agreements for more SAMP/T systems and possibly new orders for missiles and anti-drone weapons. These systems are important for defending cities and stopping incoming Russian attacks. However, it is still unclear how all these deals will be funded, as military equipment is extremely expensive.
Before signing the agreements, Zelenskiy will meet French defence companies, including Dassault, which makes the Rafale aircraft. Later in the day, he will attend a meeting between Ukrainian and French drone companies. Both countries want to work together to improve drone technology, which has become a major part of modern warfare.
France has played an active role in supporting Ukraine during the war. Along with the United Kingdom, France is pushing for a group of around 30 countries that would continue to send military help and place forces near Ukraine’s borders once a peace deal is reached. The goal is to make sure Ukraine stays strong enough to stop any future attack from Russia.
Zelenskiy’s visit comes at a crucial moment. Ukraine needs stronger air defences to protect cities from Russian strikes. It also needs modern fighter jets to match Russia’s military power. By strengthening ties with France and securing long-term support, Zelenskiy hopes to give his country the tools it needs for both immediate defence and future security.
