Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday that Ukraine is in talks with the United States about a possible presence of U.S. troops in the country as part of security guarantees. Zelenskiy also raised concerns about what he described as a faked attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence during his discussions with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine remains committed to peace talks and is ready to meet Putin in any format, despite the lack of trust between the two sides. “I told President Trump and European leaders I am ready for any format of meeting with Putin. I am not afraid of any format. The main thing is for Russians not to be afraid,” he said.
Trump, speaking earlier, said the two leaders were “maybe very close” to an agreement to end the war, though he noted that territorial disputes remain a significant challenge. He also suggested that European countries would take on much of the responsibility for peacekeeping, with U.S. support.
Russia has accused Kyiv of launching a drone attack on one of Putin’s residences, claiming 91 long-range drones targeted the property. Ukraine denied the allegation, calling it a fabrication aimed at justifying further attacks and delaying peace negotiations. French officials also dismissed the claims, saying there was no evidence to support them.
Despite Russia’s accusations, the Kremlin has not provided physical proof of the alleged attack. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called it “state terrorism” and warned of potential retaliatory strikes, though Moscow has not withdrawn from peace talks.
In addition to diplomatic tensions, maritime clashes between Ukraine and Russia continue to escalate. Ukrainian officials reported further drone attacks by Russia on ports and civilian ships in the Odesa region, an area vital for Ukraine’s trade and wartime economy. Ukraine has responded by deploying sea drones against ships connected to Russia’s sanctions-busting operations.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed cautious optimism about achieving peace within weeks, thanks to U.S. security guarantees. He also hinted at the potential deployment of U.S. troops to the front line, though details remain unclear, and the White House has not commented.
Zelenskiy’s discussions with Trump highlight Ukraine’s push for stronger international security support while continuing efforts to negotiate an end to the war. The situation remains tense, with Russian accusations and ongoing military actions complicating diplomacy.
As Ukraine seeks additional security guarantees, the world watches closely. The outcome of these talks could shape the region’s stability and the course of the conflict, which has persisted since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
