Amazon Pauses 21 Air Operations After Miami Cargo Plane Crash

Amazon has paused its operations with Miami-based cargo carrier 21 Air after a plane operating for Amazon Air crashed at Miami International Airport, killing five people.

The decision follows an ongoing investigation into the September 6 accident, which occurred when a 21 Air-operated cargo flight overran a runway and struck several vehicles on the ground.

Amazon Suspends Cargo Operations With 21 Air

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company decided to pause its operations with 21 Air after reviewing circumstances surrounding the crash and supporting the investigation.

Amazon said it would continue assisting investigators and supporting people affected by the accident.

21 Air operated Flight 7598 for Amazon Air, the company’s cargo transportation network. The carrier said it remains focused on supporting the families of those affected while cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board and other partners.

Five People Killed in Miami Airport Crash

The cargo aircraft overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport and collided with multiple vehicles on the ground, according to officials.

The aircraft was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter. Flight tracking data showed that the plane had previously operated as a passenger aircraft for several airlines between 1994 and 2015 before being converted for cargo operations.

The crash has raised questions about the final moments of the landing and the decisions made by the flight crew.

NTSB Investigates Landing and Speed Concerns

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the accident.

Investigators said evidence from the aircraft’s flight data recorder indicated that the pilots considered aborting the landing after the plane touched down.

The NTSB also said one pilot had warned shortly before landing that the aircraft was travelling too fast. Investigators are examining the aircraft’s speed, landing conditions, crew actions and other factors that could have contributed to the runway overrun.

Cargo Plane Was on Third Flight of the Day

Flight 7598 was completing its third flight of the day when the accident occurred. The aircraft had earlier travelled from Cincinnati to Miami before flying from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It was returning from San Juan when the crash happened at Miami International Airport.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s operational history, maintenance records, flight data and crew communications as they work to determine the cause of the accident.

Amazon and 21 Air Back Investigation

Amazon said its decision to pause operations with 21 Air is focused on safety while the investigation continues.

21 Air said it remains confident in its safety policies, procedures and training. The carrier also said it would continue working with the NTSB, Amazon and other parties involved in the investigation.

The suspension puts Amazon’s relationship with the cargo operator on hold as investigators work to establish what caused the fatal Miami airport crash.
