German luxury carmaker BMW has issued another profit warning, saying higher restructuring costs could sharply reduce its operating margin this year. The company expects expenses linked to its cost-cutting programme to affect fourth-quarter results, putting additional pressure on its financial performance.
The latest warning marks the company's second major outlook reduction in less than five months. BMW is restructuring its operations to improve efficiency and respond to growing competition in the global automotive industry. The programme includes thousands of planned job cuts in Germany.
BMW now expects its automotive operating margin for the year to remain between minus 0.5% and 0.5%. This is a significant reduction from its earlier outlook and reflects the expected impact of restructuring expenses.
However, the company said its margin could remain above 2% if these special restructuring costs are excluded. This suggests that the underlying business continues to face pressure, but the additional expenses are a major reason behind the weaker full-year forecast.
The company also reported an 11% decline in third-quarter pretax earnings, which stood at around €2.1 billion. The result was in line with market expectations.
BMW's core automotive operating margin reached 3.4% during the quarter. Although this was slightly better than analysts had expected, it was lower than the 5.2% recorded during the same period last year.
BMW Chief Executive Milan Nedeljkovic said the company would speed up structural changes and reduce management functions more quickly.
He said changing conditions in the automotive industry require faster decisions and quicker action. The company is therefore increasing the pace of its restructuring programme.
The cost-cutting plan is aimed at making BMW's operations more efficient while helping the company manage higher expenses and changing market conditions.
Declining demand in China also affected BMW's third-quarter performance. Revenue fell by 6% to €30.4 billion, partly because of weaker sales in the world's largest automotive market.
BMW's sales in China dropped by 22% during the first nine months of the year. The company said this decline reflected the wider slowdown in the Chinese car market.
Western automakers are facing stronger competition from domestic Chinese brands, which are attracting customers with lower prices and expanding electric vehicle offerings.
BMW said China remains an important market for its future business. The company is preparing to introduce its new iX3 model there as part of its Neue Klasse vehicle programme.
BMW is adjusting its product plans to meet the needs of customers in different regions. In the United States, the company plans to expand its luxury sports utility vehicle range, while Europe could receive a new entry-level model.
In China, BMW intends to increase local development and strengthen its supply chains. It also plans to use its Chinese production facilities to supply other markets across the Asia-Pacific region.
The company has a long-term target of achieving an automotive operating margin between 8% and 10%. Its new product strategy and restructuring programme are intended to support that goal.

BMW is not the only German luxury automaker facing financial challenges. Mercedes-Benz also reported lower third-quarter profits, while Porsche has been working through major changes to its vehicle range and business strategy.
Competition in China, changing customer demand and the cost of developing new vehicles are creating difficulties for established European carmakers.
BMW's latest warning highlights the financial pressure facing the company as it restructures its business and invests in new models. Its performance in China, the launch of the Neue Klasse range and the success of its cost-saving measures will remain important factors for its future earnings.
