Amazon’s self-driving car company Zoox has started offering free robotaxi rides to selected early users in parts of San Francisco. The company announced this on Tuesday as it pushes forward in the growing and highly competitive autonomous ride-hailing market.
This move comes at a time when major technology and automotive companies are racing to make driverless transportation a practical reality. Tesla has launched its robotaxi service, while Alphabet’s self-driving unit Waymo has also expanded its operations. These developments have put stronger focus on making autonomous vehicles commercially successful, even though strict regulations, high costs, and federal investigations have forced many smaller companies in the industry to close down.
Zoox is now inviting people from its waitlist to experience the service. The robotaxis will operate in several areas of San Francisco, including South of Market, Mission District, and the Design District. Zoox says the goal is to improve the service and collect feedback before offering it to a wider audience.
This announcement comes just days after Waymo revealed that it would begin offering rides using freeways in major U.S. cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Waymo already provides paid robotaxi services in several cities and has been operating on San Francisco streets for years.
Tesla has also entered the market with its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. It has started a ride-hailing service in the San Francisco Bay Area that uses human drivers for now, as the company works toward a fully autonomous system.
Zoox stands out for its unique vehicle design. The company has created a small, box-shaped vehicle that looks like a toaster on wheels. It does not have traditional manual controls—there is no steering wheel or pedals. This design shows Zoox’s confidence in a future where passengers will not need to take control of the vehicle at all.
Zoox has already been offering free robotaxi rides to the public around the Las Vegas Strip since September. Now, by expanding the service to parts of San Francisco, the company is taking a major step toward competing with the biggest names in the market.
The autonomous ride-hailing industry is moving forward quickly, and Zoox’s latest move shows that Amazon is ready to challenge Tesla and Waymo in one of the world’s most advanced testing grounds for self-driving cars. As companies continue to invest in new technologies, customers may soon see robotaxis become a normal part of everyday urban transportation.
