Boeing Wins Major Boost at Dubai Airshow as Emirates Orders 65 New 777X Jets

Boeing enjoyed a strong start at the 2025 Dubai Airshow as it announced major new aircraft orders led by a huge $38 billion deal with Emirates. The event, held at Al Maktoum International Airport, drew thousands of visitors and marked an important moment for the global aviation industry as airlines look to renew fleets and expand routes.

Emirates, the flagship airline of Dubai, confirmed it will buy 65 more Boeing 777-9 jets. This order pushes its total purchase of the 777X family to 270 aircraft, making Emirates the world’s biggest buyer of these wide-body jets. The deal comes even though the 777X programme has faced several delays, with deliveries now expected in 2027. Experts say the new agreement may also include compensation for these delays.

Emirates CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum called the purchase a long-term investment that supports a large number of highly skilled jobs in the aerospace industry. The airline is also backing Boeing’s study on developing an even larger version of the aircraft, known as the 777-10, which could set a new standard for long-distance travel.

But Boeing’s success at the show did not end with Emirates. Ethiopian Airlines placed an order for 11 more Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets, strengthening its position as a leading African carrier. Air Senegal also announced plans to buy nine 737 MAX aircraft, with options for six more. Brazil’s Embraer, a competitor that focuses on smaller aircraft, also reported fresh orders and hinted it may increase production soon.

While Boeing took the spotlight on the first day, eyes are now on Airbus. Industry insiders expect flydubai, another major airline in the region, to announce a significant order that could favour Airbus. The European manufacturer is also studying the possibility of building a larger version of its A350 family, but first it must address concerns raised by Emirates about maintenance costs for the A350-1000.

The Dubai Airshow also saw a notable moment for China’s aerospace industry. China’s COMAC brought its C919 jet for its first Middle East display, signaling its ambition to compete globally. However, experts say COMAC still faces challenges because its aircraft lack certifications from major Western regulators, which limits their ability to be sold widely across the world.

For Emirates, the desire for bigger aircraft is not new. The airline played a key role in making the Airbus A380 superjumbo famous, using it to move millions of passengers through Dubai. But with the A380 no longer in production, long-haul airlines are looking for the next generation of wide-body aircraft that offer size, efficiency, and long-range capability.

As the 2025 Dubai Airshow continues, both Boeing and Airbus remain under close watch. With global travel rebounding and airlines planning for the next decade, the competition between aircraft makers is stronger than ever. The first day clearly leaned in Boeing’s favour, giving the American company a strong push as it works to rebuild confidence after years of production setbacks.
