Cathay Group is gearing up for a significant fleet expansion programme spanning regional widebodies, narrowbodies, and freighters, with major order decisions expected in the coming years for deliveries in the first half of the 2030s. The announcement underscores the airline group’s long-term commitment to network growth and fleet modernization.
Speaking at Routes World in Hong Kong, Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam outlined the carrier’s 10-year fleet strategy, emphasizing systematic planning to support network development. “Fleet planning is really important to support our network development, and we’ve been doing this very systematically,” Lam said.
The airline’s 10-year strategy, running from 2026 to 2035, is structured in two five-year segments. Lam indicated that the first half of the plan is largely settled, with a steady stream of new aircraft joining the fleet each year. “Each year we have a number of new fleets joining us,” he said, highlighting the group’s disciplined approach to fleet acquisition.
Narrowbody Expansion
Cathay Pacific and its low-cost subsidiary, HK Express, will continue to strengthen their narrowbody fleet. In 2026, the group expects deliveries of Airbus A321neos and A320neos, reinforcing its regional and short-haul operations. These aircraft are crucial for maintaining capacity on high-demand Asian routes and for supporting feeder traffic into Hong Kong International Airport.
Long-Haul Renewal
The airline’s long-haul fleet is also poised for renewal with the arrival of its first Boeing 777-9s in 2027. These next-generation widebodies will help Cathay maintain operational efficiency while expanding long-haul capacity. In addition, Airbus A330neos and A350 freighters are scheduled for delivery in 2028, reflecting the group’s growing focus on cargo operations in response to rising demand.
Beyond 2030: Major Fleet Decisions Ahead
Looking beyond 2030, Cathay faces significant fleet decisions for the second half of its 10-year plan. Lam confirmed that additional aircraft will be required across all categories: regional widebodies, narrowbodies, and freighters. “We also have a number of decisions that we need to make in the second half of the 10-year plan. Regional widebodies, we need more of them. Narrowbodies, we need more of them. And freighters, we will need more of them,” he said.
This next wave of orders is expected to be substantial in scale. Lam cited 14 additional Boeing 777-9s planned for the latter half of the decade, bringing the total number of 777-9s joining the Cathay fleet in the next decade to 35.
Strategic Investment and Hong Kong Commitment
Cathay’s expansion is closely tied to its commitment to Hong Kong and Hong Kong International Airport. The group has already invested over HK$100 billion (£10 billion) in fleet and infrastructure, with plans for further investment aligned with the broader needs of Hong Kong and China. Lam emphasized that the scale of the upcoming orders would reflect both the airline’s network ambitions and its dedication to regional development.
Cathay Group’s ambitious fleet strategy represents one of the most significant airline expansions in the region over the next decade. With a mix of narrowbodies, next-generation long-haul aircraft, and freighters, the group is positioning itself to meet growing passenger and cargo demand while maintaining operational efficiency. The decisions taken in the coming years will define the airline’s network and competitive positioning well into the 2030s, reinforcing Hong Kong’s status as a leading aviation hub in Asia.
