CenterPoint Energy reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter earnings and announced a $1.2 billion increase to its 10-year capital investment plan as electricity demand continues to grow across its Houston service area.
The U.S. utility company said increasing power requirements from businesses, particularly AI-driven data centers, are prompting additional investments in electricity infrastructure.
CenterPoint posted an adjusted profit of $0.40 per share for the quarter ended June 30, exceeding Wall Street's average estimate of $0.37 per share.
The stronger earnings reflect continued growth in electricity demand and ongoing investments across the company's utility operations.
The company raised its capital expenditure plan for 2026–2035 to $66.7 billion, up from the previous $65.5 billion.
The additional investment will be used to expand and modernize electricity infrastructure, improve grid reliability, and accommodate new customer connections.

CenterPoint said demand for electricity continues to rise as technology companies build new data centers to support artificial intelligence applications.
The company now expects 14 gigawatts (GW) of eligible or studied electricity load by 2031, representing a 65% increase compared with its current peak system demand of 21 GW.
Chief Executive Officer Jason Wells said expanding the customer base and supporting regional economic growth are expected to improve affordability over time.
According to the company, new customer connections over the next decade could reduce Houston Electric's residential and commercial delivery charges by at least $5 billion.
CenterPoint Energy supplies electricity and natural gas to more than seven million customers across Texas, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Ohio.
The company's latest investment plan reflects the broader trend among U.S. utilities increasing infrastructure spending to meet rapidly growing electricity demand driven by digital infrastructure, industrial expansion, and artificial intelligence technologies.
